Phone Service: Information regarding recent Caller ID Spoofing/Scam Phone Calls

Informational Notice: This is an informational alert regarding the phone calls that appear to come from the University (Spoofed Caller ID) and/or Spam phone calls.

 

We have created a specific web page that details the issues with these calls and how to handle these type of phone calls.  We urge all to look at this information as often these phone calls “look” like they are originating from within the University.

 

Caller ID Spoofing and Phone Scams

 

We recognize that these types of phone calls are very intrusive and frustrating.  Unfortunately these type of calls are very hard if not impossible to eliminate due to the nature of how telephone systems work.  We are actively trying to mitigate these issues but the best practice is to learn how to identifying spoofed and/or spam calls and ignore them.

                  Any phone calls that originate from the University will typically only show an extension and name (example: Service Desk 8585)

                  If incoming calls have an area code and a University Number (example: ‘12538798585’ or ‘912538798585’), these are probably spoofed and/or spam calls and should not be answered and ignored.

                  Technology Services can do very little with these types of calls.  Any tickets created regarding these may be closed with links to the Caller ID and Phone Scam web article.

·        Systems that rely on active directory credentials to login may fail intermittingly, this includes email, vdesk, and VPN.

 

REASON FOR IMPACT: There is a critical security vulnerability that needs to be patched.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

·       Logins may fail intermittingly during the maintenance window.

·       Typically retrying will fix any failed login attempts

·       Phone/VOIP will be intermittently be affected as switches reboot

  • Phones and analog converters will be remotely rebooted; reboots generally take between 1-5 minutes.
  • While phones are being rebooted they will not be functional and calls may get dropped.
  • Devices will re-register and eventually come back online.
  • Devices connected to analog convertors, such as fax machines, will also temporarily go offline as the convertors are rebooted.
  • If you are logged into a Soft phone session via Jabber, you will need to logout and re-login.

[Tscommunications] {NETWORK}: Phone/VOIP Upgrade – July 15th, 2020 – 7PM to Midnight [CANCELLED]

NETWORK: Phone/VOIP System Upgrade

July 15th, 2020 – 7PM to Midnight

SYSTEMS IMPACTED:  All VOIP Services on campus will be affected including, desk phones, walls phones, and all devices that use VOIP analog converters such as Fax machines, elevator phones, security systems and emergency towers.

REASON FOR IMPACT: Technology Services will be performing an upgrade to the phone system increase stability, reliability and interoperability with our phone system. This maintenance will cause short intermittent downtime to phone/VOIP services (typically less than 5 minutes) around campus between 7PM and Midnight.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

·        In the event that we have a longer than anticipated outage, we will send out an update

·        All phone/VOIP services will experience intermittent down time as we migrate phones and VOIP devices to new servers.  While the migration of these phones will not take long (usually less than 5 minutes as the phones and devices reboot) we will need to do testing and verification during the full maintenance window.
