LIBRARY LOGGED: Microfilm scanning

A student worker saw me looking at the microfilm, and offered to help me scan microfilm and send it to me. Yay!

That’s great! Our student workers have been working really hard on improving quality service this year. We’re really glad to hear that it improved your experience.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Bananas?!

Someone keeps leaving banana peels all over the library. Although I realize it is difficult to slip on a banana with a carpet, they are smelly and a few are rotting. Please do not overlook them! Thanks.

We try very hard to keep our library free of detritus & messes, including banana peels, but if you notice something we’ve overlooked, please mention it to a staff person. That way, we can clean it up right away. However, we’ll keep an extra sharp eye out for banana peels in the future!

LIBRARY LOGGED: NY Times Digital

Will the library’s subscription services offer a way for students to bypass the NYT pay-meter? (outside of digging through lexis)If so, will that be available remotely?

The short answer is not at this time.  However, the NYT is still figuring out all of their digital subscription models, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on what they come up with.  Hopefully, the NYT will offer a library subscription to their digital content in the future.

In the meantime, we do have access to the full-text of the daily NYT online via ProQuest, which is fairly easy to search and browse.  And shortly the NYT will be offering discounts to their digital content to students at colleges & universities.

From the NYT Subscription Site:

Question: I am affiliated with a college or university. Can I get a digital subscription discount?  Answer: Soon we will announce a discounted digital subscription option for current faculty, students, administrators and staff at eligible colleges and universities. Eligible colleges will be those that purchase a qualifying number of copies of The New York Times as part of their newspaper readership program. Restrictions will apply. In the meantime, we encourage you to take advantage of the general promotional offer.”

LIBRARY LOGGED: Kleenex

why isn’t there Kleenex in the library anymore?

There is now! We ran out briefly, but have restocked. If you’re looking for some in a public area, just let a staff member know & we’ll put some more out.

LIBRARY LOGGED:

I keep hearing about this great digital online film archive we supposedly have. But I can’t find it! Could we have a link or more information on the main library page? Or at least have it come up in a website search?

We’re glad to hear you’re interested in Films on Demand, Collins Library’s streaming video service, and thanks for letting us know you’re having trouble finding it. Below you’ll see a list of ways to find these films on demand, as well as a list of what we’ve done to try to make it even more accessible.

You can find Films on Demand by:

  • Going to the libary’s home page and clicking Databases A-Z, clicking F, and scrolling down to Films on Demand.
  • If you’re searching the library catalog for a particular film, if we have it via Films on Demand, you’ll find a link to the item thanks to the efforts of the library’s cataloging department. For an example, see this catalog entry for King Lear.
  • By searching for the words Films on Demand in the site search.

We’ve also tried to make the films easier to find by publicizing them. You’ll find more information about Films on Demand posted:

  • On the endcaps of the DVD and video shelving
  • And on the wall display in the Learning Commons with the new book jackets.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Staplers

Put regular staplers back by the printers.  The industrial is too much for small jobs, but great to have with larger print jobs.

Done!  We now have a standard stapler and the larger stapler near the printers.  We hope that users will take advantage of the larger stapler when needed and extend the life of the smaller stapler.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Wireless printers are working!

Wireless printers working again!

For those that are having problems printing to the wireless printers, we have a solution.  You will need to delete the printers from your laptop and re-install them using the instructions found here: http://www.pugetsound.edu/files/resources/5128_laptop_printing.pdf

This should eliminate the error we have been continuously experiencing recently.  Should the error appear on the printer, one needs to turn off the printer, wait approximately 30 seconds and turn it back on.  That should clear the problematic print job from the printer and allow the “good” print jobs to process.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Wireless printers are not working

The wireless printers are not working.

We do apologize for the inconvenience.  Both of the laptop printers are displaying an error with a vague definition of “communication error”.  Essentially, there are “bad” (for lack of a better word) print jobs that have been sent to the printer and they cannot be processed.  The error can usually be cleared by turning the printer off and on again and canceling the current print job that may be causing it. However, when an individual continues to send the same problematic print job, not realizing it is the source of the error, it will just cause the error to continue.  Due to the wide variety of laptops using the printers and the wide variety of configurations of those laptops, it is next to impossible to pinpoint the exact problem.   Technology Services, which manages the network aspect of printing, is working on a permanent solution at the network level.

Until the wireless printers on the main floor are working again, you are able to add the downstairs printer in room 034 to your laptop.  Here are instructions to do so: http://www.pugetsound.edu/files/resources/5128_laptop_printing.pdf

LIBRARY LOGGED: Open Earlier?

Perhaps open earlier

&

Open earlier in the morning @ around 6:30. Classes start @ 8:00

Classes at 8 are why we open at 7:30 on Monday though Friday when classes are in session (snow permitting!). A few years ago, we moved from opening at 7:45 to 7:30 in response to student requests, but because of the amount of staff hours we have, and the amount of hours the library is open, we can’t push opening earlier. During 24/7 periods, we also track library use, and we have very little use at 6:30.

Opening at 7:30 lets people at least stop by and drop off, pick up, or print materials before class at 8:00.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Why click for availability?

The call #’s and availability should be on the first page by name instead of having to click link and wait 10 mins for it to load.

I assume your are referring to SUMMIT.  Unfortunately, the system to search for and request SUMMIT items has changed significantly and is unable to display the call #;’s and availability of the item on the initial results page.  In the previous system, all of the library catalogs were connected and acted as one large library catalog which allowed the location and availability items to be displayed.  The new system acts as a bridge between our catalog and the catalogs of the other SUMMIT libraries.  When you find an item in SUMMIT and click on one of the libraries to check for the availability of the title, the system is essentially running a search for that item in that library’s individual catalog and then pulling the information back to your screen.  It does take time as several steps are happening in the background to bring you the information.  This was a necessary change and we do realize that it can be frustrating to not have all of the information displayed automatically.
