Desks on the Fourth Floor

Please return desks or armchairs to the fourth floor in the space next to the wall to the left of the door. This used to be a great place to study, and now the space isn’t being utilized at all.

We had to remove these desks due to the elevator construction. While it looks like the space around the elevator isn’t used, we actually need it to maneuver book carts, items for storage, and any furniture we might add to the floor, such as the additional seating in the window area.

We will continue to look for desks and furniture of suitable size for this floor, so we hope you’ll find some new places to work on the fourth floor!

If you’re looking for a cozy, quiet place to study right now, I’d suggest trying the 3rd floor. It has many nooks and crannies and individual study desks.

Midterm Hours

  • Unsatisfactory library hours.  This is midterms week.
  • Midterms should have 24 hr. lib. Service like finals.  ESPECIALLY given we still have other activities UNLIKE during finals.
  • The library NEEDS to stay open later than 12.  We are students & we want our library rights.
  • Have longer hours please!  2am is perfect!!!

Starting next Monday, October 17, the library will be open until 1am. We hope this will help!

For more information about why hours changed, see this post.

Individual rooms with computers

Please bring back print release stations. Also the individual rooms with computers on the main floor 🙁

Hopefully the printing situation has resolved (you can find more info about that here). Here’s some information, though, about the individual room computers. This summer, computing and building changes meant we had to reassess our study rooms overall. We found the computers were all trickle downs–old machines that were discarded from other uses. It was no longer possible to keep these trickle downs functional because of their age, so we had to remove them. We’d encourage you to bring laptops to the study rooms for your own individual computing spaces, though.

Printing System

I was hoping you could switch the printing system of the library back to how it was last year. I heard that the system changed which affected how the printing was set up, but it’s awful to see how much paper is wasted. I haven’t heard a single person who likes this new printing system, and I think we would all appreciate knowing that we aren’t wasting as much. Thank you so much!

We continue to receive a lot of feedback about printing since the beginning of the semester.  Technology Services is very receptive to the problems you have been having.  One key factor in addressing many of the issues you have been experiencing is to alert the Technology Services Desk at the moment they occur.  For instance, if you are using a computer that should be printing to I-Commons printer 2, but is printing to I-Commons printer 1, please let us know right away.  It is very helpful to diagnose a problem and work toward a solution if the staff can see what is happening in the moment.

Below is a previous guest post from Cindy Riche,  Director of Client Support & Educational Technology Services to address your concerns.

Hi, all!  I just wanted to thank everyone for hanging in there as we worked to resolve some start of the semester issues with printing and computers in the library.  We are really sorry for the inconvenience this created for many of you.

We made updates on Friday, Sept.9, that we believe have fixed the problems, but if you continue to experience any issues, please contact the Technology Service Desk at 253.879.8585 or servicedesk@pugetsound.edu.

Thank you so much,

Cindy Riche

Bike Racks

  • Need more Bike Parking
  • MORE BIKE LOCKS!!! People are starting to block handicap ramp because there’s no room for bikes. Let’s be sustainable! Thanks!
  • Need my space for bikes!!!
  • More bike racks, please.
  • More places to lock bikes!!!
  • Please get bike rack – bikes on ramp preclude wheelchair and walkers w/ rolling bags

We heard a lot of concern about bicycle parking from a variety of worthy angles–sustainability, accessibility, people who just want their bikes to be there when they get back.

We agree completely, and are happy to announce that Facilities has installed a new phalanx of bike racks near the library. In addition to the previously installed bike racks just next to the library’s entry ramp, there are now bike racks on the east side of the doorway, close to the ramp leading to the library and quad from the parking lots.

Hopefully these will give everyone space to park, and help keep the ramps accessible to everyone. The library and campus security take accessibility seriously, so please don’t lock your bikes to ramps or hand rails.

Thanks to Facilities for installing the racks we needed, and thanks to all of you for telling us what we needed!

Noise on the 2nd floor

It would be great if there was a staff member on the 2nd floor that was charged with controlling noise levels. People can become very disruptive and difficult to quiet without legitimate authority.

We will continue to be attentive to the noise level on the second floor and post additional signage reminding users to keep noise levels down.  Please contact a library staff member if the noise becomes problematic.
As a side note, the noise level decreases the farther away one is from the main floor making the 3rd and 4th floor quieter areas to study.

Library Hours

  • Library hours need to change back to 2am now!
  • Closes too early. Please leave 1st floor w/comps open until 2
  • I love Collins Library. So much so that I cannot believe it is closing at midnight! I know this has been an issue for me, as well as other students, who tend to study at night, due to work, classes, or sports. Collins is the best place on campus to get your work done quietly. I know many would be very grateful if the closing time could be changed back to 2am.

Thanks for your feedback about hours.  We have had several requests to revert back to the 2:00 am closing.  This year’s change in open hours reflects a change in staffing. We will continue to review library staffing, schedules, and building use in order to maximize the utility of our open hours.

The good news is that after mid-terms we will be open until 1:00. During finals, we also will have extended 24/7 hours, which we will soon announce.

Temperature

  • Please put better ventilation in study rooms. It’s to(o) hot.
  • …Needs air-conditioning (too hot)
  • It’s way too hot in here!

Temperature is always hard to calibrate, and we’ve heard a lot of concern from you recently and in the past.

Facilites has explained to us that although they have done a lot of work to improve and update the HVAC system, the library building does have an exceptionally complex system, which makes it difficult to calibrate the temperature throughout the building. In fact, while we were receiving complaints about heat in the comment boxes, we received verbal complaints at the same time that it was too cold.

We’d suggest layering and picking your study areas to suit your needs depending on whether you run hot or cold. We’ve observed that the Reading Rooms and the Link are cooler places. We’d also suggest trying areas along brick walls and north walls (facing towards Kilworth Chapel) for cooler temperatures. The Learning Commons on the other hand is quite warm.

Please keep letting us know when you’re too uncomfortable however, and we’ll keep working with Facilities.

Printing kiosk?

You should set up a designated computer for students to print things, like how the mail room has a computer set up explicitly to look up your combination/package number. I couldn’t turn in my pre-lab today because all the computers were occupied and wireless printing seems to be a thing of the past. Not cool!

Setting up a print-only station is difficult as the computer would need to be configured identically to the other Learning Commons computers, essentially just adding another full use computer.  In regards to the availability of computers, if all of the workstations in the Learning Commons are in use there are additional workstations downstairs in library 034 and a computing lab on the 3rd floor of McIntyre.
Wireless printing is still available.  Please stop by the Service Desk in the lower level of the library (library 018) for assistance in configuring wireless printing on your laptop.
