LIBRARY LOGGED: Double sided wireless printing

Could you get two-sided printing on laptop printers?

Yes, you can get two-sided printing on the laptop printers very easily! Here’s how you’d do it:

  1. Go File>Print, select your printer, and click Properties.
  2. Then, look for an option to choose double sided printing—often under printing shortcuts or layout. You’ll probably see a screen similar to one of these below:
  3. Click OK, and your printout will be set to be double sided.

Speedy, easy, and good for the earth!

Library Logged: Paying Fines

I think that the library should allow student to pay fines with with credit and debit cards. Some people can’t get a hold  of cash fast enough and don’t have access to checks.

We would like that too! Unfortunately, the software that would let us take cards to pay fines would be a very costly purchase, and is problematic to integrate with the software that currently manages student accounts campuswide.

However, this is definitely something we’re aware of and thinking about. While we don’t have an immediate solutions, we are continuing to keep an eye  out for possible solutions in the future.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Broken printers

Why are the printers ALWAYS broken?

We agree that there have been quite a few printer problems in the library this semester.  Each printer in the Learning Commons prints several thousand pages a day and it does take its toll on the machines.  We do get them repaired as quickly as possible but it is often necessary to order parts and it does take time for them to arrive.  On a positive note, the new printing system allows users to move print jobs from one printer to the other.  You can also bring in your laptop and use the laptop printers in the front of the library.
In addition to the Learning Commons, printers are located:

  •  in the lower level of the library in the Tech Center
  •  McIntyre 324
  •  Howarth 109

LIBRARY LOGGED: Vacuuming

There is no reason that vacuuming has to occur during open hours…OBNOXIOUS!!

We understand that vacuuming can be disruptive to study! We’re using alternate solutions—a carpet sweeper, a quiet vacuum— but any vacuuming that is done during the day is done only for a brief period of time.

At this time of year, the Library carpet gets covered with pine needles and debris very quickly, and we don’t always have custodial services assigned to the building during the 2:00 am to 7:30 am period  that we are closed. Therefore, we try to keep on top of the building maintenance.  In addition, we have many groups meeting in the Library, and sometimes we must clean up before an important visit or event.

We take great pride in our building and want to support our hard working custodial staff.  We really appreciate your patience when we must take a few minutes during the day to perform maintenance at the Library.

We are keeping this problem on our radar, and we will also make sure to keep the noise level under control during reading period and finals week.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Where is KBP?

where [on earth] is the KBP section?!

The KBP section is found on the library’s second floor. Unlike most Library of Congress call numbers, law sometimes gets 3 letters, but the 3 letters are still read alphabetically, so KBP is nestled on the second floor between the J sections and L sections.

You are always welcome to ask a librarian, anyone at the Circulation Desk or anyone at the Learning Commons Information Desk about where to find your book. We’ll always be happy to help!

If you’d prefer to do some wayfinding yourself, here is what I would recommend.

If you find a book in Collins Catalog, look under the call number for a link that says library map:

librarymap

If you click that, you’ll see a popup map showing you what floor your book is on, as well as roughly what area of the floor it’s on. Kind of nifty, I think!

The second floor is very extensive, so if the general map indicating that your book is in the back room of the the second floor isn’t as much help as you’d like, we also have detailed maps of the  second floor that can help you find your book, like so:

KBP

If you’re looking for music scores and books on the second floor (call numbers beginning with M), check out the 2nd Floor West map. If you’re looking for any other book with a call number between D-L, check out the 2nd Floor East map.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Your computers are too slow

Fix your slow computers!! You have the money for new ones!!

The computers in the learning commons are actually not supplied by the library, but by Technology Services. Plus, because of the way budgets are allocated (e.g. we receive x amount for x project) we can’t just transfer money from one project to another. However, just like  all the computer labs, the Learning Commons is on a replacement schedule, so older computers are eventually rotated out for new ones.

If you notice a particular computer is running especially slow, let us know the computer number (on a little sticker in the middle of the tower), either by a note in the comment box, or by telling the Learning Commons student. Even the best computer can get bogged down with unnecessary processes & scripts. When we have the computer number, we’ll ask for repairs & cleaning. If you notice that every computer you log in to is slow, you may also want to check with TS about whether your profile is slowing down the login.

Also remember that you can bring in your laptop! Then you can control the computer speed. Students at the Learning Commons desk can help you set up wireless printing and map to your network drive on your laptop.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Entering the building after 9pm

How do we get into the building?  We see people in the library, but the doors are locked.

Access to the library is restricted to current Puget Sound students, faculty and staff after 9pm.  To open the doors you need to swipe your Puget Sound ID card through the card swipe to the right of the entrance.

LIBRARY LOGGED: Quiet please (that means us)

There is a serious problem here with people not respecting the universal rule of libraries [being quiet]. I have noticed that often the loudest people are Collins employees. Please do no carry on conversations in non-indoor voices behind the circulation desk. When one group of people on the main floor begins to talk, it encourages others to disregard teh quiet rule. This is an observable effect. PLEASE keep it down.

Point taken! We will be more conscious of using indoor voices at work. Collins staff are working to:

  • Try to keep staff conversations away from public desks – in work areas instead with the door closed.
  • Create better signage about “quiet zones” so you can find a quiet zone quickly.
  • Consider moving our meetings to more unobtrusive locations.
  • Let each other know when we hear each other making a noise.

While we’ll work really hard to make sure that our conversations are reasonable, the main floor is not a quiet zone, and simply can’t be, as we have thousands of students, faculty, and staff passing through each day. Conversation has to happen somewhere in the library, and since the main floor is by nature louder given the comings and goings, that’s where it tends to settle. I’d suggest going up to the higher floors or into a study room for true silence.
