{Firewall/ Network} System Maintenance, August 15 @ 5:00 a.m.

This is an announcement from Technology Services (TS). Please see details below.

Firewall/ Network: System Maintenance

Wednesday, August 15 from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

REASON FOR IMPACT: Technology Services will be testing our new firewall equipment to ensure that our back up procedures function correctly in the event of equipment failure. Our firewall equipment sits in front of our primary Internet line and helps funnel access appropriately. If we encounter technical issues with our main Internet line or part of our firewall equipment, we want to ensure that the campus will not lose complete network and Internet access. During this maintenance window the campus will briefly lose access to the Internet while we test our back up procedures. Any loss of Internet/ network should be brief with minimal impact to those on campus during this window.

Subject: {Internet/ Network} Firewall Upgrade Complete, vDesk Inaccessible

This is an announcement from Technology Services (TS). Please see details below.

Internet/ Network: Firewall Upgrade Complete, vDesk Inaccessible

REASON FOR IMPACT: Technology Services has completed our firewall upgrade and most systems and services are accessible. Our vDesk system is currently inaccessible and we intend to have this available again later this weekend.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

·        A network firewall is used to help protect our internal Puget Sound network from both external and internal threats. Firewalls help information technology teams wall off portions of technology systems, like our Puget Sound servers, from general Internet access, which is a key step in preventing unauthorized access to our University data and systems. Next generation firewalls like the Palo Alto we’re installing are also setup to help mitigate potential threats as they are happening, in the moment they are happening. Older firewalls have less proactive toolsets and rely on staff to manually update configurations to address potential threats.

·        For more information on Technology Services’ Incident Communication Plan or to view a list of our Critical Systems and definitions, please visit our Service Announcements page on the Puget Sound website.

{Network} Switch Maintenance, July 27, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This is an announcement from Technology Services (TS). Please see details below.

NETWORK: SWITCH MAINTENANCE

Friday, July 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

REASON FOR IMPACT: Technology Services is performing maintenance on our Cisco switches to increase network stability, reliability and interoperability with our newer Juniper switches. While this maintenance should not cause any outages or loss of network/ Internet access, there is a small chance that we would need to reboot a switch to finish our configuration. In that scenario there would be a brief, 3-5 minute network outage for a small area of a building while the reboot occurs. During the maintenance window this evening, if you do notice that you are no longer able to access the network, please wait for a few minutes and try again.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

·       In the event that we have a longer than anticipated outage, we will send an email out via this listserve and we will notify Security Services.

·       This maintenance will not impact Jones Hall as we replaced the Cisco switches in that building with Juniper switches last summer.
