Double-sided printing

Why aren’t all the computers set to default print double sided?

All of the computers on the main floor of the library should print double-sided by default.  If that is not the case for a particular machine, please notify a library staff member so it can be fixed.  In the interim, you can opt to print double sided (or single-sided) for individual print jobs by choosing Print under the Office Navigation button, selecting the Properties button, clicking the Finishing tab and checking or unchecking the Print on Both Sides option.

24/7 hours

thanks 4 being open twenty-4 hours

You’re welcome! We’re glad we can be open for you during the finals and finals-prep period.

Many thanks to the staff who worked really hard and made it possible for the library to stay open 24/7!

Noisy!

It’s very distracting when people talk on the phone or work in groups in the front room. Perhaps there could be signs reminding patrons to be considerate of other who would like study in silence.

The first floor is by nature a little louder than the other areas of the library, with lots of coming and going, checking in and out and conversation. For silence, we’d suggest heading to an upper floor—the higher you go, the quieter it is. Check out the whole guide to quiet and group study for details about the best places for either.

That said, if you’re disturbed by people being too loud, we suggest simply asking them to quiet down politely. Most people are just a little unaware of their volume. If that doesn’t work or you’re too uncomfortable, let a library staff member know, and we will speak to the noise-makers. We want the library to be a good place for everybody—those who need a little noise & those who need silence!

Dedicated printing computers

Could we get one or two computers solely to print from?

Because of the way our campus is networked, we can’t really set up a computer to print from without you logging in—in which case, it seems just as difficult as printing from a regular computer. We could designate a regular terminal for printing or for short term use, but that would mean one less computer to use during busy times.

New printers

Get a new printer! (and variations thereof)

We did! We heard a lot about new printers from many of  you over the last few months, and we are exceedingly happy to say that with the help of Technology Services, we have installed one new printer already.

Not only do we have one new printer to replace the older one, a second has been installed to reduce printing lines and wait times. It also means we’ll have a backup printer on the main floor, so even if one does go down, there will be a second option.

Hot water for tea?

Can we at least get a hot water heater so we can make tea, etc. while at library? It seems like that would be simple enough.

Alas, ‘seems’ is a very appropriate word. The complexities of books, plumbing, and wiring is apparently more like complexity³, rather than the comparatively manageable complexity x 3.  We are continuing to work on this, and will keep you updated.

Update:

Here is an update from the library director, Jane Carlin:

We are getting a hot water tap downstairs and work should begin by early February 2010.  The drinking fountain near the copy room in the basement will be modified to be a hot water tap, along with a work surface providing instant hot water for cocoa and tea!

More places to study!

More places to study! During finals week… it’s too crowded 🙁

We’re sorry you’re feeling crowded, though we’re pleased to be so popular. A few thoughts for lesser-known nooks and crannies that I don’t see being used as often:

  • In the bound periodicals study carrels on the lower level
  • On the fourth floor in the easy chairs at each end of the floor
  • The carrels in the P-PQ room on the third floor
  • Let us know your suggestions in the comments
