Original Phishing Message

Tips for Detection

  • Technology Services adds a “Caution” banner at the top of email messages that match patterns of previous phishing attacks. If you see this banner, please use extra caution. Note that the absence of the banner does NOT necessarily mean an email is safe.
  • If you do not know the sender and are not expecting an email, do not engage.
  • If you recognize the sender’s name but the email address it not the usual method of communication, contact the individual through a known means of communication to check if they actually sent the message.

What might have happened if I responded?

Most likely, the “favor” referenced in the email may have involved purchasing gift cards and subsequently sending the information to them which would allow them to use the funds.

How are you doing? Actually, I need a favor from you. I’d appreciate if you could email me back when you get this.
