Featured Artist from the PSBA 5th Anniversary Book – Jan Ward

It is hard to believe, but Puget Sound Book Artists is celebrating 5 years as an organization. In honor of this most auspicious occasion, members were asked to contribute a page to a 5th Anniversary book. Throughout the summer, we will be adding new images to showcase the 5th Year Celebration Book. The 5th year book project is coordinated by An Gates, PSBA Board member and lead curator of the 2015 exhibition team.

Jan Ward“My curiosity spurs my work as I respond to my infinite muse: the world around me. I explore through the challenge of mixing media— papermaking, hand printing, photography combined with encaustics, found objects, and ‘rustin’ bring me deep satisfaction.”

It’s always a challenge to come up with a new book each month, but it inspires me to try different techniques and materials. Being a member of both NORBAG and PSBA gives me a link to many creative and talented artists”.

Deborah Greenwood“I explore the tension between the traditional book format and using materials outside their expected use. I am looking for the story in ordinary unexpected disposable materials. Often this discovery of story is found by shifting the focus or the expected angle of view just far enough away from its original form in order to really see it, or see what it feels like rather than what it looks like.”

Dorothy McCuistion“My approach to making art is direct and uncomplicated. I harvest the essence of plants, animals, people and places to transcend time and place. I layer the personal with the universal, the local with the far-flung, and the mundane with exotic. Observational drawings, random marks and images captured in photographs are all grist for my art making. Ultimately, shape and color dominate.”

Five Years and Counting

Take a cake, a cellist, banners, a memorable keepsake printed by Jessica Spring of Springtide Press, add a room full of artists, guests and patrons, and 44 handmade books created by 28 book artists, and you have yourselves a party. June 4, 2015 marked the opening reception of the Puget Sound Book Artists 5th Annual Members Exhibition at Collins Library on the University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma Washington. After five years, the organization had much to celebrate. From a small group of five individuals, the Puget Sound Book Artists has grown to over 80 members and in 2013 was the recipient of the AMOCAT Award for community outreach by an organization. To date over 60 mini-workshops, lectures, presentations, exhibitions and other PSBA related events have been hosted or sponsored by the Puget Sound Book Artists, with more already scheduled into 2016. As I said, we had much to celebrate.

The Soul of the Artist

March 1996 - opened resizedArtists know there is more than one way to see.   We sketch what is immediately in front of us, which can be interpreted in infinite ways, leaving us open to criticism from others who state emphatically, “That’s not what it looked like at all.” Or, we practice the alternative, sketching with something vaguely known as the “mind’s eye”, in which case most people walk away without saying a word, as if what we have on our minds is just too strange to address.

Walking along the beach or sitting on a patio, we see a composition, a pattern, or perhaps even a moment. Like everyone else, we see what is in front of us. Unlike the vast majority, we feel compelled to set it down on paper before we forget, or lose the image forever; or maybe not. What if the vision is simply stored away, only to be reincarnated with the smallest provocation, days or maybe even years later, but now, slightly askew? Is the mind’s eye simply the culmination of a lifetime of experiences and memories that are just now finding their way back from where ever they have been stored patiently waiting for just the right moment for us to see them again?

Drawing from multiple sources, Kate Kern, obviously, has found her own way to see.  It is as if Kate is seeing what is in front of her and her mind’s eye simultaneously.  Whether walking around an installation titled, Red Animals, created from A Golden Nature Guide, or looking at a sketch titled March 1996-Opened, one appreciates the serendipity of the mind’s eye, combined with a lifetime of experience. Or perhaps we are just seeing the soul of the artist.
