Books on Running Marathons

You’re most recent book on running marathons is from 1996.  Can we get something a little more recent?

We sure can! I’ve ordered a couple of more updated books. Our main goal in collecting books is to support the curriculum, so our new acquisitions will focus the exercise science side of marathon running, but there should be some good information in them for you to apply.

There are a couple of good resources you also might want to check. The library provides access to Runners’ World via the database SportDiscus with Full Text. You can find the magazine here and search within it or just browse recent issues. Additionally, you can request books on running marathons from any of the Summit Libraries, and we’ll get them here for you in 3-5 days.

Front table outlets

Please fix the outlets on the front tables
These outlets are 11 years old and we understand they they need to be repaired.  Once we identify a vendor that can fix or replace them we plan to do so.

Music Cataloging

PLEASE organize the CDs by genre or alphabetize. I would love to find music without having to search the online catalogue.

Thank you for your comment. We agree that browsing CDs by genre would be easier than searching the catalog. If we made the change, it would make our accession numbering system obsolete. We would have to reclassify the entire CD collection so that those who use the catalog could find them by genre. We will investigate other options for making the collection more accessible.

Film Collection

You should expand your film collection. It’s truly perplexing, a vast array of Japanese cinema and [the movie] 300…

Yes, I could see how it might be perplexing–that is quite a juxtaposition!

However, in the context of the library’s major responsibilities in collection, it begins to make more sense. Collins Library’s key mission is to support the academic programs here at the University of Puget Sound and collect books, movies, and journals that support the curriculum. For that reason, most film purchases are made at the request of a faculty member to support a specific class. You will definitely find feature films, because they’re used by classes in communications, in English, in foreign languages, and more, but we don’t have the resources to collect feature films that aren’t used by a class.

There are several possible avenues to find more films. You can:

Bags, please!

We need bags!

Bags, please!

And now you have them!

We found the two comments above in our comment box at the beginning of the rainy season: a very timely request. There is now a box of bags near the Circulation desk, where you can take or leave a bag to carry books. Please grab a bag if you need one to carry your books, and bring it back in a couple of days when you don’t need it any more so the next person can use it.

TV in Learning Commons

I was pretty appalled to see the TV near the first floor computers playing some sort of show this Monday evening.  Libraries are for studying, not for watching television.  It’s also a waste of energy.

To support learning outside the classroom and awareness of current events, we have begun displaying the Nightly Business Report, BBC World News America and the PBS NewsHour on weekdays 5-7pm.   Staff may, from time to time, forget to turn the screen back to slideshow mode right after this news break (we have come in to work in the morning to find Curious George playing more than once).  If you notice a long lag time to get the screen turned from TV to slideshow mode, please ask the library staff to do so and we’d be happy to switch it.

We also use this screen to share information about library and university events.

The Learning Commons is an active study space.  We get a lot of traffic in the Commons and it is not really designed as a quiet study space – but more of a research and work space.  If you want quiet study space, I suggest the Study Commons on the opposite side or the first floor reading rooms or private study areas on the basement level and on the 2nd floor.

Office supplies for the laptop printer

Having a 3-hole punch and stapler next to the laptop printers (Lib 1& 2 would be very helpful! Thanks 🙂

What a good idea! You’ll now find a 3 hole punch and a stapler next to the laptop printers. Run out of staples? Let the student at the Learning Commons desk know, & they’ll replenish them.

Happy stapling!

Student Workers, Working Hard

  • I like the research pamphlets. Provide More! Student Worker A is very helpful.
  • Student Worker B is a beautiful person.
  • I heart Student Worker B. FACT.
  • Student Workers C & D are great.

We kept the names off the web for the privacy of our student workers, but they know who they are, and we’re so glad to hear over the term that you’ve received great service from them.

Thanks for letting us know when one of them makes your day!

Hours

WE NEED OUR HOURS BACK

This comment seemed to sum up a lot of others! We are pleased to announce that the library will return to a 2am closing time as of October 31. Since that’s Halloween, we want to assure you that there are no tricks about it, just treats (literal ones, in fact, at midnight). Thanks for all your feedback, and good luck with your studying!

Quiet spaces

The other Government Publications room is the only isolated, non-claustrophobic, silent, space.  Unfortunately, it is always occupied.  We miss the big desks in the music section!

It’s always tough when spaces change! The Government Publications room is a quiet, isolated space, which is great (but it sounds like the problem is too many people agree on this…) Here are a few other suggestions for quiet spaces:

  • The carrels on the third floor literature rooms
  • The fourth floor
