Staplers, hole punchers, etc.

Can we have working staplers, hole punchers etc. please. The runaround & lack of basic supplies are not helpful or necessary

We provide staplers and hole punches, plus paper clips, pencils, and even bags for books to keep them dry in our rainy climate, as a courtesy. However, some of the supplies, like staplers and hole punchers in particular,  are getting stolen or misplaced so often that we can hardly keep up with replacing them sometimes. We’re almost constantly hunting down or replacing staplers, hole punches, and more. We’ve already replaced the big staplers twice this year!

However, we’ve been able to add chains to the staplers this week, so we’re hopeful that while this will decrease the convenience of their portability, it will increase their reliability.

If you notice a particular stapler is not working, please don’t hesitate to let whoever is at the Circulation or Learning Commons desks know, and we’ll resupply or fix it as soon as possible.

Reading Room Outlets

We’ve gotten a few comments about the Reading Room table outlets over the last few years, and getting them fixed has been surprisingly complex.

We are so pleased, however, to announce that they should all now be in good repair!

The outlets are rather old, and many of the pins and bolts had broken over the years, leaving the outlets stuck or wobbly. The repair men recommend that we leave these outlets open and propped up (not to open and close them) as this will minimize ‘wear and tear’ on the pins and they will last longer.

If you’re using one, please help us out and leave it open when you’re done! As the time passes it may become harder to replace the hardware. Help us keep them in good order and you’ll be helping us stay green-both environmentally and fiscally!

Sanitizing cloths

Are the complimentary sanitation wipes out of service? They would be nice to have around again, esp after encountering a keyboard that was more oily than usual…

Also, i wasn’t able to figure out how to adjust the chair at ICOM-27 to not recline so much. I wonder if it is broken. It was uncomfortable and ergonomically unfriendly 🙁

We will be purchasing more sanitizing wipes for the public areas.  In regards to the chair — there are two styles of office chairs in the Learning Commons and each adjusts differently.  The type of chair I believe you were using can be set in a reclining/rocking mode or be locked in an upright position.  To keep the chair back from reclining, push the bar found on the right side of the chair perpendicular to the floor all the way to the left.

Second Floor Desks

When there were large desks near the music section on the 2nd floor, they were full every night, especially Sundays.  I used to arrive at the library a few hours earlier just to claim one of the desks because they were such a rare commodity — secluded (but not claustrphobic) isolated spaces with absolute silence.  I just want you to know that it is a Sunday night and there is not a single student at the new couches that have since replaced the old large desks.  Please bring the desks back or create a new similar space.  The “other Government Publications” room will be my new spot… unfortunately it is often occupied.  Thank you.

We try to meet the needs of all our students, but it’s tough, because like any big group of people, there are a lot of needs and wants that sometimes preclude each other.  Many students asked for more comfortable seating in the area near the music section.  We felt that since there are lots of desks on the second and third floors that serve the same purpose as the carrels that were removed, it would be a good idea to add the comfy seating to the music section. We hope you can find a place you like just as much.

Dirty Front Windows

the library front windows are really dirty and need to be washed

The University of Puget Sound is a large campus and in the winter with all our rain, snow and fog, the windows are bound to get dirty. Window cleaning is scheduled at regular intervals throughout the campus and we can assure you the Library is on the schedule! When it’s our turn, we’ll be back to squeaky clean.

Tech help

It would really be an asset to weekend patrons if somebody could work the learning commons.  The front desk is not super equipped to manage technical isssues with the computers or printers.

We do have students working the Learning Commons desk several hours on Saturday and most of the library’s hours on Sunday.  During the times that a Learning Commons student is not available, the Circulation desk students and staff offer as much help as they are able.  Please be aware that many issues that may occur during the evening or weekend hours cannot be resolved by library staff or student staff as they fall outside our scope of troubleshooting abilities or computing privileges.

It is important to note that the Technology Services Help Desk is open noon-4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Plants in the library

Can we please get some plants in the library? It would really brighten up the library!

We agree plants would liven up the library.  We borrowed a tree last semester and we actually have a new ivy plant in the study commons.   If you have ideas about how we might acquire and maintain plants without incurring costs – please let us know!
