Print Queue

Please bring back the print queue for the Icommons printers!  It’s really hectic with people digging through huge stacks of paper and the printer spewing out more.

A new print release station is up and running.  While we are still fine-tuning the new system, it has eliminated the problem of stacks of paper accumulating at the printers.  We are happy to hear that you find the system useful.

Text a Call Number

the send via text message feature on simon is awesome!

We’re glad you think so! Thanks for spreading the word that you like it.

Haven’t used it? Try it out by searching Collins Catalog and look for the link to:Send via text message

Check out other mobile technologies at Collins Library, too.

Second Floor Signage

The second floor needs better signage.  Many students don’t know where the “ML” books are shelved–it’s not obvious.  And every time I come off the ramp from “link” and enter the large room in the new part of the building, and I’m looking for an “H” call number, I have to wonder, do I need to walk all the way to the northeast corner of the room, or all the way to the southwest corner?  Many times I have guessed wrong and had to walk from one corner to the other.  A prominent shelving map like the “Floor 2-Detail,” mounted on the wall, would help.

Thanks for your suggestions about improved signage in the Library.  We agree that additional signage would be beneficial, and in fact we are reviewing all the signage in the building, so we’ll take your suggestions into account.

While we don’t have a wall map, you can pick up a reusable laminated detail map of the second floor at the Learning Commons Information Desk to take upstairs with you.

Keep your comments coming! It’s really helpful to us to know what parts of the building are difficult to navigate.

Where’s my book?

Why don’t you have Harry Potter?

We do—but not all of the books, because we focus on buying books that support the college curriculum. But while we don’t have all the Harry Potter books on site, you can easily see  all the Harry Potter books available to you by using Puget Sound Worldcat. Either pick up the ones we own, or request the others that are owned by Summit Libraries.

I did a quick search for Harry Potter in Puget Sound Worldcat, and found we have two books here, and many others available for request through Summit.

Happy reading!

Have a great summer!

Things on the blog will be quieting down for the summer (though not in the library, as we work on lots of projects to get the library ready for fall)! We’ll still respond to comments we receive, but since there are fewer of you around, we expect we’ll have less to respond to. So expect a few posts now and again until September, when more frequent posting will resume.

Very helpful

Two great shoutouts to student employees this week!

  • “[This student] is very helpful and makes iCommons a warm environment” (This person was also kind enough to rate all the library’s services, materials, and building at 5, plus the student assistant a 20!)
  • “Give this girl a raise! So personable & sweet, yet professional & knowledgable.”

Thanks for letting us know how great our student workers are—we wholeheartedly concur!

Laptop printing

Running out of ink on the two only wireless printers…
You ran out of toner during finals week…

We apologize for the inconvenience.  The Library and Technology Services does maintain a back stock of toner cartridges, but occasionally and unexpectedly, the demand is greater than the supply.  In this instance only the laptop printers on the main floor of the library were out of toner.  While you may not have been able to print from your laptop to the printers on the main floor of the library, the printer downstairs in Library 034 was still available for printing from your laptop.

Here is a link to instructions for adding the Library 034 printer to your laptop: http://www.pugetsound.edu/files/resources/5128_laptop_printing.pdf

There is also the option of saving the documents to your network drive or emailing them to yourself and then logging on to one of the machines in the Learning Commons or Library 034 and printing from that computer.

Tea & Sympathy

Thanks for the hot water disp!

You’re welcome! We’re glad to know it’s useful and that you enjoyed the tea during reading period! Keep an eye out for more during finals.

Still too hot!

Several complaints recently about the heat in the library–from “Turn it off!” to “It’s too warm!”

Alas, we can only apologize and advise layering. The HVAC is mightier than we are, and while facilities continues to work on the problem, solutions are simply not quick.

If you’re too hot and looking for an especially cool area, we’d suggest trying areas along brick walls and north walls (facing towards Kilworth Chapel).

Any other ideas? Help your classmates out in the comments.
