Summer Creativity

Just because I was away from campus and all my art classes this summer doesn’t mean I didn’t keep my creative juices flowing! Over summer, I decided to find a project for myself. It was perfect timing too because a good friend of mine, Ani, was moving into her brand new apartment come fall and needed some stuff to fill it up with! After some extensive webernet searching, I came across the perfect project: A framed paint swatch dry-erase calendar!

Here’s my process:

  • rob a hardware store of almost all of their paint swatches
  • find a sketchy craft fair/flea market and buy a shabby frame from a neat old lady
  • get ripped off buying glass for said frame
  • raid a craft store and buy too many stickers and adorable things
  • arrange, cut, and glue down swatches in correct order
  • ???
  • PROFIT

I stuck the glass in the frame and surprised my friend with it–she loved it and it now sits on her desk in her new home!!

To be completely honest, after all the work and money I put into this thing, I had a hard time not keeping it for myself.

Ah well, next time! I’m just very glad Ani liked it. A summer of creativity well spent!

Artist of the Day: Papercut

I recently came across a fantastic and extremely talented artist by the name of Sarah Dennis while browsing tumblr the other day. She creates intricate papercut works of art of fascinating animals and ornate designs. Artists like her are quite an inspiration, so I thought I’d share some of my favorites that she’s done. You can find her Etsy store here!

Am I a freelancer yet?

My friend and suitemate, Kaitlyn Lea Vallance ’16 is running for residence hall senator here on campus! She asked me to design a fun little poster for her campaign. I sat down with an idea and in two hours had this! Thought I’d share it. Love me some graphic design!

Starting Autumn off Right

Today was a really good day. Two of my three classes where cancelled, one of my professors for another class is gone for the whole week, and I woke up to a “package received” email from the mailroom! Because I have an awesome mom, my day was made even better–she sent me an autumn essentials care package!

Halloween candy, some sweet snacks, a cozy flannel button-down, and an adorable garland!

All this stuff wasn’t even the best part. My dad recently went fishing (again, I know, he’s quite the fisherman) with some buddies in Mexico, and he came back with so much fish that they had to get a vacuum sealer to store it all. Mom thought this would be a good way to send baked goods to me…I present to you, vacuum brownies.

They ended up being delicious! But I just couldn’t pass up this hilarious opportunity to share.

Thing #97258 to look forward to in college: Care packages from your awesome parents!

From Sketchbook to Blog: Random Character Generators!

If you haven’t already been able to tell from many of the topics of my blog posts, I like art. A lot. I’m constantly sketching and doodling, everywhere on everything (just paper, don’t worry). I thought I might start sharing some of my little pieces from the week and such, just so you guys can get an idea of what I do in my free time.

My art usually has to do with whatever is particularly captivating to me at the time. Be it video game characters, my own mindless ramblings, environments, clothing, my suitemates… sometimes dragons. Just dragons.

So here’s what I’ve been playing around with recently: random character generators!

An RCG is a list of various character attributes that each correspond to a different number on a different dice. For example, a D20 (10 sided dice) might have a list of potential archetypes, such as Hero, Rebel, Warrior, Destroyer, Buffoon. Next, a D12 would have a list of genres or eras to pick from, i.e. Gothic, Medieval, Cyberpunk, Civil War, Western. Then there would be a D8 with items for your character to hold, like a hamburger, a magic amulet, a rolled up newspaper, a bow and arrow, or a shrunken head! And finally, a simple D6 would determine the gender of your character–even for female, odd for male.

I used an RCG similar to the one I described and ended up landing these characteristics: A female Seeker in the Gothic Era who carries a Battle Axe! After some internal debate about the definition of “Seeker“, I came up with this little lady! She’s yet to receive a name.

(Not gonna lie, I’m quite proud [and jealous] of that battle axe)

The point of RCGs is to boost your imagination and creativity, allowing you to get out of a art block you might be stuck in. If you sit down with the drive to create but just can’t think of WHAT to create, use an RCG! There’s tons of versions all over the internet, and you can even create your own!

That’s so METAL

This semester, I had to fulfill my 3d core for my art major.

I’ve already taken ceramics.

I’m afraid of working with wood because of splinters.

So what am I taking? Metal.

IMG_1708

Ever heard of a Plasma Cutter? Me neither. Did you you know you can cut steel with an electric flame? I didn’t. Is it a commonly known fact that welding two pieces of steel actually CREATES a single piece of metal? Apparently not.

These things and more are all that I’m learning in my new metal sculpture class! It’s intense. Like, really intense. But it’s also super awesome. Don’t believe me? Check out these artsy-fartsy photos my buddy Daniel Peterschmidt ’15 took while I was working in the shop the other day.

Velkommen til Poulsbo!

Summer has ended, and it’s good to be back at Puget Sound. Before I moved back onto campus, I came up a little early and stayed with my some of my parents’ high school friends at their beach house in Southworth! One of the last days I was there, we took a trip up to Poulsbo, the neat Scandinavian town known as “Little Norway”. The whole town was full of photo opps, so I thought I’d share some of my favorites from our visit!

Driving back to the beach house, we got caught in a CRAZY rainstorm, which made me remember how much I missed the rain! Since just the ladies went to Poulsbo, my dad and his buddy Rick went out and fulfilled one of my dad’s lifelong dreams: Salmon fishing! I was so excited to see them and their catch when I got home (though not as excited as my dad was, he was practically like a kid in a candy shop). Here’s a picture of Rick (left) and my dad (right) with the delicious Silver and Pink Salmon they caught for dinner that night. Priceless!

Woofstock 2013!

Oh. My. Gosh. Today was one of the happiest days of my life. The sun was out, the weather was nice, and I went to Woofstock. And that would be an animal festival on Todd Field! I was so happy for those 20 ish minutes that we were there, feeling so much love from all of the dogs and puppies, and not a lot of love from the kittens, but they were all so precious!

We first walked into a squad of chubby, panting, slobbery English Bull dogs. At one point, one of them had his tongue sticking out almost to the ground, and when I squatted to take a picture, another one nudged in to be a part of the fun.

Hey buddies!

Hey buddies!

Basically what Woofstock is is an event where there is live music being played while people walk around to perhaps adopt dogs, cats, or rabbits. There was a great array of puppies and older dogs, ranging from a couple months old to one that I saw who was 13. Many of the tents were from shelters wanting people to rescue the dogs. And many were adopted! Like our tiny Chihuahua and terrier mix friend, Oreo. Definitely a crowd favorite!

It was a fun day to walk around and see people with their cute and strange looking dogs. We met one dog with 3 legs who had been swimming in a kiddy pool and was the friendliest dog I had ever met! She ran up to us and was loving getting petted. Right afterwards, I went to a gate and was petting other puppies, when I felt a wet creature nudge me, and it was that same 3 legged dog, wanting all of my attention. I loved it so much and wished I could take one home, but being a college student and having our hands full with Louis, it wouldn’t have been a good idea. But it’s a fun thing to do in the summer if you’re in Tacoma, a really fun thing to do with friends.
