Original Phishing Message

Tips for Detection

  • The sender is impersonating a VP at the university. Notice the sending email address is an @gmail.com address, not an @pugetsound.edu address.
  • The email asks you to use your personal email address to contact another staff member at their personal address. No details are given as to the identity of the staff member. Many phishing attempts may ask you to use your personal email or personal phone number.
  • Beware of offers that are too good to be true. With this particular scam, a fake moving company is generally created to collect funds to move the nonexistent piano.

Dear Staff, Faculty and Students at University of Puget Sound.

I hope this email finds you well. I’m reaching out to you on behalf of one of our staff at University of Puget Sound who is looking to give away her late Dad’s Piano to a loving home. The Piano is a 2014 Yamaha baby grand, and it is in excellent condition. It would be an incredible addition to any music enthusiast’s home or studio. If you are interested in the piano or know someone who might be interested, please do not hesitate to reach out. Please contact her ( olcottesleigh[@]outlook[.]com) to arrange the inspection and delivery with the moving company. It is best to email her using your personal email for a swift response.
