A Day at Pike’s Place

I finally threw together that video from my visit to Pike’s Place with my buddies! Just a few simple clips. I’m really starting to like documenting trips this way, it tells a lot more than just pictures! Anyway, enjoy our antics! (and my reaction to having Beecher’s World Famous Mac n’ Cheese for the first time)

Ready, Set, Print!

This spring semester, I’m taking my first ever printmaking class, and I’m so excited! We’re going to be learning about both screen printing (done on a fabric screen we stretched and stapled ourselves) and lithography (big, BIG ‘ol limestone etching).

I’ve worked with screen printing once (if you can even count some goofy summer camp in middle school) and was really excited to learn more about the process and see what I could create. I just recently finished our first assignment: an open ended screen print that used at least 3 colors. I chose to use an old sketch of mine from last year of a rose as my image, and got to work!

The first step was cutting the stencils. Since I was going to be using four colors, I had four stencils. This was probably the hardest part; my design was SUPER intricate and getting in all the tiny spaces with my X-ACTO knife left my fingers very sore! Since the printing process is done in layers, you print one color at a time on every paper. Here’s how my first layer turned out: the dark green in the stem!

Next was the first color of the blossom!IMG_4673 copy

Things were going pretty well! However…

IMG_4675…mistakes were made.

Next, I printed the light green on the stem and leaves to give it dimension.

At this point, there was ink EVERYWHERE. (Though, honestly, I kinda like messy art!)

The final step in my printing process was the give the petals on the flower some definition, which I did by adding a lighter pink. Here’s how the final print turned out! (The photo makes it appear pretty red, but it’s more of a deep pink/magenta!)

And that was the process of my first screen print! I would say the whole thing took me about 6 hours, maybe 7. I then picked the best 5 prints and submitted them for my edition. It was REALLY fun (mostly because I love hands-on art) and I’m feelin’ pumped for my next project!

SNOW DAY!!

That’s right, for the first time since I’ve been going to school up here at Puget Sound, it SNOWED LIKE CRAZY!

I’m from Southern California. I was a little excited.

By the time there was at least 2 inches, maybe 2.5, there were people all over the quad having snowball fights, building snowmen, and participating in general snowy merriment. Naturally, I met up with a bunch of friends and joined in the fun! Frozen fingers have never felt so welcome.

The snow stayed until the next morning too!

Soon, Tacoma locals gathered on campus to enjoy the wintery goodness with sleds and such. Students had their own way of sledding as well… using trays from the SUB! Perhaps not the most highly condoned behavior, but it was some serious fun. Can you blame us?

SAACS Shirt Design!

Spring semester 2014 is here! I’m getting back into the swing of things, and that includes work. Other than blogging and making videos for Puget Sound’s website, I also work as a graphic designer for ASUPS on campus, that is, the Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound! My most recent assignment was to design a shirt for a club on campus: SAACS, Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.

They jokingly refer to themselves as the “Thompson/Harned Residents” because they spend most of their time in those two (science!) buildings! As this is the case, they were looking for a design that featured the Oppenheimer Cafe, the all glass cafe in the courtyard of Thompson, and a student sleeping in the window with the moon above. I thought I’d share my two draft ideas while I worked!

More Art!

Here on campus, the underground cafe/pizza place known as the Cellar is quite the hang out. It’s also where the improv team I’m a part of performs weekly! Since I spend a lot of time down there–either performing, visiting friends at work, or waiting for a delicious pizza–I often have a little time to sit down and doodle on receipts. Recently, two of my goofy drawings made it on to the cork board next to the register! Both requests by my good friend who works at the Cellar, here’s the…interesting drawings now on display.

From Sketchbook to Blog: My Spirit Animal

As a redhead, it’s only natural that I would align myself with the red fox, right? Well, they just happen to be my favorite animals. Conveniently, they’re also one of my favorite things to draw! Here’s a couple sketches of my, well, spirit animal.

My Metal Creations

As you guys learned from the many pictures of me sporting a dust mask and goggles, I’ve been taking Metal Sculpture this semester! I’ve learned, welded, sliced, sawed, bent, heated, created, and gotten really sore over the course of the past few months. Here’s some of the projects I’ve finished so far!

Project #1: This project was pretty simple, just so we could get used to working with the equipment. The guidelines were to create a structural form with a “linear” form that pushed the boundaries of stability. For my piece, I crafted a triangular-hexagonal prism with “linear” wings. It wasn’t very big, but I was pleased with it considering I’d never worked with metal before this year!

IMG_4077 IMG_4076 IMG_4079 IMG_4078

Project #2: The next project we were assigned was meant to incorporate a material other than metal in the sculpture. Called the “Hard and Soft” project, the “soft” material could be virtually anything; people in my class used cotton, velvet, pennies, colored velum, even pipettes from a biology class. Inspired by the rock hunting my dad and I used to do in the desert when I was a kid, I chose to create crystalline structures that were accompanied by flowing blue fabric that suggested water. This has been my favorite piece I’ve made so far.

IMG_4274

Project #3: The most recent project I finished was one inspired by an artist of our choice! Because I’ve always been fascinated with street art and its culture, I decided to pick Banksy as my artist. If you’re unfamiliar with him (first of all I’m a little surprised!) he’s a pretty famous, anonymous street artist whose stencil work usually features striking images with some sort of social or political commentary and sassy slogans. Running with this theme, I decided to make a steel stencil with a pretty grotesque image–a child holding a beer bottle and, well, losing his lunch. It’s covered in steel flowers as well, because I wanted the first thing that jumps out at you to be something beautiful, sort of a disguise for the not so pretty image that would be left by the stencil. Here’s what I mean! The stencil before painting…IMG_4290

…and after! (featuring a heart not included in the above picture)

IMG_4298

Honestly I was just impressed/glad that the image came through when stenciled!!

I’ve had a ton of fun in this class so far. My next and final project is going to be an expansion on the crystal project; I’m going to focus on creating an environment, rather than an object, by essentially turning one of the rooms in the studio into a crystal-filled cave. It will be lit with string lights under more of the same fabric, making it like a glowing waterfall. If all goes like I plan, it should be pretty cool! I’ll be sure to post pictures of the finished project.

Until then, I’ve got LOTS of metal to mold.

Thanksgiving!!!!!

Every year, because I live in AZ and it wouldn’t make sense to go home less than a month before winter break, I go to Oregon with my friend Kelly! Last year, it was just me tagging along with the Van Patten’s, but this year 4 of us came! Our friend Alex, Riley, and Jeremy came to get a feel for the small town of McMinnville and all of its amazingness. We, to the dismay of Kelly, took a picture with the statue of Ben Franklin in the downtown, we walked down to the families quarry, ate a lot of turkey, celebrated Hanukkah, and played with the most loving dogs in the world! We watched a lot of My Fat American Gypsy Wedding and played Cranium with her family (very heated since we’re all geniuses”). I won $33 in a family game called Contento and we went to Portland for a while and ate at the DELICIOUS Bread and Ink Cafe and had an amazing scramble and a lemon with scone with their homemade strawberry jam. I went to a tree farm for the first time, but we couldn’t find a tree up to standards (15-17 tall).

All I could do was summarize just a teeny tiny piece of the trip, but Northwest Thanksgiving are so…fall-y!

Good old Dad

Got sent this picture a little while ago, had to share it. Just my dad boasting his Puget Sound swag back home at the beach! (And a fashionable fanny pack as well) Definitely makes me miss home.

Me and the Beards

It’s Thanksgiving break! This turkey season, I spent a day in Seattle with my bearded bros (hence the title, it only seemed appropriate). Took some awesome pictures, and little bit of video that I hope to put into a movie soon! While I figure out how to work Adobe Premiere, I thought I’d share some of the photos I took.

This was the first time I’ve been to Pike Place Market when everything was open, and since it’s the holiday season, the place was even busier than usual!

IMG_7222

This was also the first time I visited the famous Beecher’s, and had their world-famous mac n’ cheese. (My reaction to which was caught on camera by a friend, expect that in the video!)

The bros (Kevin Kates '14, Michael Mulay '15, Dylan Dolin '16) checkin' out the menu at Beecher's.

We also made a stop in one of my favorite comic book stores, where they sell all sorts of nerdy merchandise.

In visiting all sorts of interesting little shops in and around Pike, we came across some interesting stuff. For instance, I seriously think one of the guys should have bought this belt buckle.

Finally, we went to nearby Seattle University to see a friend of mine in Thornton Wilder’s play, Our Town. I ended up running into his parents at the show as well, and they took a quick picture of us. I didn’t tell him I was coming to see the show, so he was pretty pleasantly surprised! It’s a good feeling, bringing flowers to a friend!

It was lovely excursion away from campus, and great way to kick off Thanksgiving break!
