“Keep it Locked”

The school’s radio station, KUPS 90.1 FM The Sound, started its fall semester shows!

I have the pleasure of being a hip-hop DJ with one of my housemates, an awesome sublet of this impressive student run radio station! We are doing a Female/LGBT friendly hip hop show! To get a better understanding of it, here is the site’s description:

KUPS 90.1 FM Tacoma The Sound is a non-commercial, educational radio station licensed to the Board of Trustees of the University of Puget Sound and operated by the Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound (ASUPS).

KUPS is 100% student-run and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, serving the greater Tacoma area with programming in a variety of genres including Alternative, Loud Rock, Hip-Hop, and Electronic, as well as an assortment of other musical genres during the loosely named ‘commuter hours’ (6-8 am and 6-8 pm).

KUPS DJs become a community, which is something that music lovers should consider when thinking of becoming involved around campus.

My friend, Travis "MC Fresher" Shetter, '15, and I at his hip hop show last year

This is my first semester with KUPS, but a lot of my friends had shows last year and it was so fun! I sometimes got to watch them at work or listen to them in my dorm, which is great. It streams live from the website, where you can get more info!

Hello There!

Me and a friend with good 'ol Goofy! I'm the redhead on the left. (with the Minnie Mouse ears!)

Hi guys! My name is Maddie Peckenpaugh (Peck-in-paw), and I’m the other Social Media Assistant for Puget Sound’s Admission Office. Like my partner Olivia said, we’ll be here to update you guys on all sorts of things happening on, off, and around campus. But for now, here’s a little bit about me!

I’m a freshman here at the University of Puget Sound, originally from Southern California. (What a change in weather!) I am a Studio Art major, and I’m hoping to minor in either Biology or Theater. I’ve been an artist since elementary school, so Puget Sound’s awesome art program was one of the main things that drew me here. (But it doesn’t hurt that the campus is BEAUTIFUL, the people are awesome, and I love the rain.) I love it already and I’m looking forward to telling you guys all about the cool stuff I get involved in on campus!

Now for some fun facts:

  • Favorite food: Sushi, all kinds (I’ve even eaten eel–tastes like chicken)
  • Favorite hobbies: Video games, drawing, photography, baking, tumblr, sleeping.
  • Favorite band: Led Zeppelin (What can I say, I’m a child of the 70s)
  • Dream job: I’d love to take my art somewhere in the video game field, hopefully conceptual art for character design or something similar.
  • Number one thing on my Bucket List: TRAVEL!! I want to see as much of the world as I possibly can.

Now you guys know a little about who will be posting on the blog! I look forward to filling you in and keeping you updated on all the goings on of Puget Sound!

NICE TO MEET YOU!

Hello everyone, I am Olivia Perry, one of the Social Media Assistants for Puget Sound’s Admission office. I will be keeping you all updated with events around the University of Puget Sound and Tacoma with my partner Maddie.

But before we go into the formal stuff, I would like to introduce myself.

I am a sophomore here at the University of Puget Sound from Phoenix, AZ. I am planning on majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing, and I’m not really sure what I want to minor in yet. I moved to the Pacific Northwest because of everything it has to offer: culture, impressive nature, kind folks, and rain. Finding Puget Sound and realizing that it was the perfect school for me was my ticket to the great state ofWashington. After living here for a year, Tacoma has become a remarkable home away from home with students that provide an infinite good and comfortable time.

I will address the activities I am/was part of in later posts, but for now I will provide you with quick facts.

Favorite Food: All food

Favorite Movies: Bridesmaids, Manhattan, John Hughes films, etc.

Favorite Music: Everything but country and screamo. I will have a hip-hop show on the school’s radio station. 🙂

Favorite Books: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

Favorite Activities: Photography, Writing, Sleeping

What I want to be when I get older: I would like to be an author or journalist

My favorite ice cream: Mint Chocolate Chip

Favorite things to do in Tacoma: Going to Point Defiance, Eating yummy Thai food, Walking by the Sound

Origins

Greetings Loggers! And loggers-to-be.

My name is Ryan Coleman, and this is one of my bosses at The Cellar, an on-campus student-run pizzeria, silly stringing me in the face.

I’m a Sophomore-Junior in-betweeny working in the Office of Admission this summer. This blog is meant to provide an insider, on-the-ground, down-to-earth, student perspective on campus through media usually dominated by administration and faculty. This blog, and myself, are like a bridge between campus initiatives and campus realities. Between student and staff.

Mostly I make videos for the office of Admission. Some high-up was kind enough to bestow me the title of “Social Media Assistant”. Which sounds like I hang out on Facebook and correct people who say “twit” instead of “tweet” in the present perfect, but that’s not so. That is what I do for off the job funtime and this is hardly my off-the-job-blog. What I really do, is make videos highlighting different elements of Puget Sound that make it a unique learning environment.  Additionally I help out with different social media initiatives to reach out to incoming and current students and build a community, like this blog, and participate in various other social media efforts. Here you look at the projects of the last Social Media Assistants, Serena Berkowitz and Erika Greene.

Some other ways you can get in touch with students and staff like me, and get involved with the Puget Sound community are:

Chalkboard: At the top of the Admission home page is the Chalkboard. The Chalkboard is an open space for students to chalk on questions that will then be answered by student staff. It’s a great way to see what other incoming students are thinking about, and get connected with current students.

Students Speak Out: Alumni share their stories, their post-grad journeys, and offer dynamic views of campus after a hot second away from it.

Virtual Tour: Take a tour of the Puget Sound campus right from the comfort-ability of your own chosen piece of furniture. See pictures and videos of residence halls, academic buildings, the library, the art gallery, and more…

Ask-A-Student email: A way to get your pressing questions answered by students with real experience on campus.  Ask-a-student offers a more private, personal insight to campus than Blackboard.

Social Media: This link takes you to a compendium of Puget Sound’s official social media branches, including Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr.

Serena and Erika’s videos are clearly fabulous, but they only show Serena and Erika’s Puget Sound. I hope to provide an accurate image of my Puget Sound through the videos and this blog.  My Puget Sound is…beautiful. It’s diverse, it’s vivacious. It gives back, it pays forward. My Puget Sound is a warm, welcoming, web of friends, faculty, staff, professors, Tacomans, Sounders, flora, fauna, and most of all funtimes. Also a lot of homework. I hope it comes off as rad as I’m trying to make it sound.

Klahowya, new friends.
