Dear members of the Puget Sound community,

Technology Services (TS) has planned the following maintenance activities. No outage or interruption to services are expected. Details on the maintenance being performed are available below:

Google Calendar: Planned Changes

Friday, January 16 | 12 p.m. – 12:15 p.m.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • TS will change how Google Calendar handles invitations sent via email. Currently, calendar invitations from any sender are automatically added to your calendar.

  • After the change, only invitations from known senders will be automatically added to your calendar. Known senders include individuals with a pugetsound.edu email address, senders saved in your contacts, and individuals with whom you have previously corresponded.

  • A gray banner will appear in invitations from unknown senders indicating that the event has not yet been added, with options to add the event or report it as spam.

  • The subject line for invitations from unknown senders will begin with “Invitation from an unknown sender,” while invitations from known senders will continue to begin with “Invitation.”

  • Once you accept an invitation from an unknown sender, future invitations from that sender will be automatically added to your calendar.

  • Please review this support article for how to adjust your individual calendar settings.

SYSTEMS IMPACTED:

REASON FOR MAINTENANCE:

  • Attackers send fraudulent event invitations that are automatically added to calendars.

  • To reduce the risk of calendar phishing, TS will adjust Google Calendar settings so that invitations from unknown senders will not appear on your calendar unless the invitation is explicitly accepted.
