Louis: It’s been a while

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you would know that I have a rabbit named Louis. If you aren’t a regular reader, I have a rabbit name Louis. We have moved and she seems to love it, especially because now there is more room for her to roam. Our house is two stories and Louis, being the smart little bunny she is, can now go up and down our stairs. People think it’s adorable, but it is very inconvenient and strange, especially when you hear her clambering up the stairs and realize it’s a giant rabbit.

And when I say giant, I mean that she is the size of a cat. Yes, a rabbit the size of a cat. She in fact scares our landlord’s cats who used to like to come into our house until they realized Louis lived here.

She has also gained the reputation of being the house’s main diva. She likes to splay herself out or jump on any piece of furniture she wants or just eat people’s fruit when they are trying to eat it, because it is theirs!

It’s hard not to love her adorable little face though. She can be frustrating and a troublemaker, but she’s fun and curious and a smart pet!

Camping!

IMG_6531

In June, a few friends and I decided to go camping. After many website visits and going to the school’s Expeditionary to find out where we should go, we finally chose to go to Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge near Sequim, WA. It is on the tip of the Olympic penninsula and has a spit (a narrow point of land projecting into the sea).

We arrived in two groups, I was part of the first group with the two guys on the trip, and then the two other girls came around 10 pm due to work schedules. Most of us haven’t gone camping in a long time, so we weren’t exactly super prepared. For example: All of the food, games, and the larger tent were with the 10 pm group.

After the three of us chose and settled at a nice campsite covered by trees and not too close to others, we decided to explore. We found a look out point where we ended up watching the sunset on our final night at the park. We also looked around a trail and found caterpillars and heard possibly a giant raven screeching at other ravens or crows.

After walking around, we were hungry and realized the food was with the second group…who was coming at 10 pm. So being the resourceful campers we are, we hopped into the car and drove into Sequim where we had a giant dinner at IHOP. Yes, camping and IHOP.

The next day after being woken up bright and early by all 1 million crows that inhabited the trees above us, we made sandwiches and set out for the 11 mile back and forth Dungeness Spit.

Even though walking by the water, trying to get closer and closer to the lighthouse was fun, it was hard work. The sand was loose and rocky. My lanky ankles had to use all of their might to keep me going, but it was all worth it. It was worth it because:

1. It was absolutely beautiful. There was awesome drift wood, the water was completely blue, the sky was clear, and the lighthouse was our majestic destination.

2. I can say that I walked the whole spit.

3. It is an experience that my friends and I will share forever.

We ended up at the lighthouse after a tiring walk and it was almost like walking into a fantasy land. After walking on unstable rocks for an hour, walking into a very green courtyard with yellow flowers was surreal.

After a long day, we went back to our campsite and ate sausages around a camp fire and decided to go to the look out point we had visited the day before and watched the sunset. It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen, I didn’t even need to edit the photos I had taken.

After a beautiful sunset and a night of games and s’mores we went to our tents and slept until we were woken up at 4 by some light rain. Over all, Dungeness National Park was one of the best experiences of my life. I recommend going for sure, but maybe not doing the whole spit unless you have awesome stamina!

We heart Oly: Olympia Part II

1010023_10201526890196800_343030558_n

My housemate, Andrea’s friend Haleigh has come to visit and we decided to go to Olympia! We walked around all day, hitting the shops that we went to when we first visited the capitol city and then some. The places on our list were:

-Dumpster Values thrift store

-Rainy Day Records

-Function and Flow

-Danger Room Comics

-Darby’s Cafe

-Cafe Vida

It was a fun day of familiarity and shopping, accompanied my the heaviest rain I have ever experienced in these 2 years I’ve lived here.

We left with several bags in tow including a new Tacoma pendant that is now hanging in our living room. Over all, Olympia is a fun day trip only 30 minutes away from our dear city of Tacoma.

Summer Book Review #1

For my 20th birthday last month, I had the great pleasure of spending 3 hours in Half Priced Books. My favorite thing to do is go to book stores and wander through the aisles and find books that look interesting and read the backs and then buy them. But my collection of books has expanded without me reading any. So, I’ve decided that this is the summer of books, books that I find interesting and want to share. So the first book I have finished is by Eve Ensler, the author of The Vagina Monologues, called Insecure at Last: Losing It in Our Security Obsessed World.

158949

This book looks at how we rely on others for security when it might not be what is actually the right thing for us. Ensler travels around the world to visit different groups, predominantly women, who have suffered through intense and traumatic political and natural events. She visits victims of the Bosnian genocide, Hurricane Katrina, the Taliban, 9/11, the Tsunami in Sri Lanka, and much more. I enjoyed the content and what she was going for, but I felt that her sympathy was a bit too self-concerning. She would say how much she felt for the women and connected with them, and I would have liked to see her give more of an outside perspective and let the victims have their suffering.

Other than those things, reading about how our “security” could be a manufactured idea to better other people’s businesses or agendas gets you to really think what safety and security really are. The book also takes you into worlds that many Americans have not learned of or experienced, making you really think about what our world’s priorities are and what they should be.

So, my rating system will be donuts, and I would have to give this book

3 1/2 donuts

ENJOY!

Critters of our Streets

Lately, there have been these two notorious deer walking around campus and are seen while walking from friends’ houses. I’m not sure if they’re brothers or just friends, but they are strong and elegant with massive antlers and the nicest eyes. We have walked by them, scared that they would rush at us, but they only stare and then go on with their business. A lot of us know about them now and it’s just a nice addition to our environment.

I also happened upon one of the many little rabbits that hop around campus.

Taste of Tacoma: How does Tacoma taste?

This past weekend, my friends and I went to the Taste of Tacoma, an event in which a ton of vendors come and provide everyone with an interesting thing to eat. The most interesting thing I saw?

It’s a tie:

-Cotton candy wrapped corn dogs

-Krispy Kreme cheese burgers

This place was nuts. Figuring that I didn’t want to experience early onset, self-induced cardiac arrest, I decide to just go with some very good fish and chips.

936445_10201555657635968_697032142_n

After eating under a tree to keep cool, we decided to look around at the merchandise. There were many booths with things such as samurai swords, gemstones, wine slushies, and more! Because it is so warm, our time there was not very long. But the food was delightful and I am planning on going next year!

A Bit Nerdy

So recently, I’ve been finding some AWESOME (and unique) instrumental music on Youtube. I thought I’d share a few that I really like, as they cover some of my favorite (nerdy) things. Some truly talented people out there, and they all seem to come forth on Youtube! Anyway, enjoy the fruits of my free time!

Summer at its Finest

Summer in Washington is one of the best things a person could experience. Here are just a few pictures I have taken around campus.
