Dear members of the campus community,
Technology Services (TS) would like to share some important updates with you regarding how you log in to your Puget Sound account. Upcoming changes to login.pugetsound.edu may require action on your part. We ask that you carefully review this information.
What is changing?
-
Phone-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be gradually retired. If you currently receive a text message (SMS) or phone call to verify your login, we strongly recommend setting up a supported MFA method – Okta Verify, Google Authenticator, and/or Security Key or Biometric Authenticator – by following the instructions in this article.
-
The university’s Okta deployment will be upgraded to Okta Identity Engine to provide a more seamless and secure login experience. You will notice slight differences on the login page, as well as improvements to account setup, account recovery, account settings, and multi-factor usage and enrollment. No action is required on your part.
What is the timeline for these changes?
-
As of June 10, 2025, new users cannot set up or use phone-based MFA methods (SMS Authentication or Voice Call Authentication). Existing users are still able to log in using those methods. The option to use a security key or biometric identifier for MFA was enabled for all users.
-
On August 5, 2025, the user experience changes as a result of the Okta Identity Engine upgrade will go live. Please see our support article on what to expect.
-
During Summer and Fall 2025, Technology Services will perform outreach and develop resources to help the campus community transition to supported MFA methods to prepare for the retirement of the SMS and Voice Call options.
