Cook's Voyages to the South Seas

ARTstor and the Natural History Museum, London has “cooked” something up: 1,647 images of botanical and zoological illustrations from Captain James Cook’s expeditions to the South Pacific! (1768 – 1779) James Cook commanded three voyages, exploring and charting the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Accompanied by naturalists and artists, they made significant contributions to our geographic, oceanographic, and astronomic knowledge.

Book Yourself Into The Library Hotel

libraryhotelBibliophiles visiting New York City and in need of a space to check into should check out The Library Hotel, a beautiful luxury boutique hostelry conveniently located on Madison Avenue and 41st Street, also known as Library Way, just steps away from the majestic New York Public Library.
Each floor has six rooms and is laid out according to the ten categories of the Dewey Decimal System: Social Sciences, Literature, Languages, History, Math & Science, General Knowledge, Technology, Philosophy, the Arts, and Religion. Each of the sixty exquisitely appointed rooms have been individually adorned with a collection of art and books relevant to one distinctive topic within the category of the floor it belongs to. Collins Library Participates in LIVE GREEN CHALLENGE

LiveGreenLIVE GREEN CHALLENGE—Learning to live sustainably and responsibly! Collins Library is participating in LIVE GREEN CHALLENGE with a Sustainability display in the Ecommons area. Not only is there a live green tree to accentuate our focus, there are exciting reading suggestions (book covers featured) for each weekly focus: Energy Conservation; Waste Reduction; Transportation; Water Conservation. Find out how you can be a winner in the group energy conservation challenge (a percentage of the saved costs are donated to one of several charities)! Expand your knowledge through Check it Out at Collins Library and add your Sustainability Resolution (written on reused paper) to the Talkback Box in Ecommons. It’s time to Live Green Loggers!!

February is Live Green Challenge month at University of Puget Sound, and Collins Library is looking to live green, too! After all, what idea could be more sustainable than a library, where many people are able to share the same resources.

We invite you to visit the library during the month of February to see our display in support of the Live Green Challenge. Stop by the Learning Commons on the main floor to find reading suggestions and a place to leave a green resolution (on re-used paper, of course!).

Keep an eye on this blog, too—each week this month we’ll release a list of selected great titles on that week’s Live Green theme! This week, the image above will take you to a list of books on energy and energy conservation.

Considering a Career in Education?

Education on Your mind? Check out the great resources on the Library gateway page;  and attend the School of Education program.

Are you thinking about becoming a teacher? The School of Education will present a discussion on “A Career in Education? Practitioners Talk about What Life in Schools is Really Like” at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in Trimble Forum.

Three teachers will speak about their experiences teaching in a variety of settings. This will be followed by what promises to be a lively and informative discussion. Food will be served. All campus members are welcome to attend. The event is presented by the Teaching and Counseling Professions Advisory Committee.
