I know that I’ve been posting a lot of pictures of pretty days, but they are so awesome after living in cold rain for a while! Here you go! Hopefully there will be more soon!

Improv in the Sun

This week’s weather has been a complete blessing. So much sun and such nice temperatures! To celebrate/take advantage of it, the improv team decided to have practice outside. Here’s a quick picture I took of our lovely sunprov! (featuring a scene between two lions)

More Litho!

I just recently finished up my second lithography print! The theme of this one was just “detail.” We had to incorporate a drawing medium called liquid tushe, which is this watery stuff that works sort of  like water color for your stone.

I decided to dedicate my print to my wonderful, inspiring mother! I decided to incorporate peaches and roses not only because they are art historically feminine images, but also because I’ve always associated them with my mom. Both are delicate, beautiful, and sweet smelling. With these images, I created what I thought it might look like if she had her own seal, or some sort of identifying image. So here’s some pictures of my process!

The print turned out a little darker than I had planned, but that’s what tends to happen in art I suppose. I titled the print “Elizabeth” and showed my mom–she was flattered and very happy! (:

Point D

Today, my friends and I decided that because it wasn’t rainy, to go on the Five Mile Drive in Point Defiance. We drove down the winding rode, seeing raccoons and families having picnics, and stopped at one of the view points looking out at the Narrows Bridge going from Tacoma to Gig Harbor. Here are a few pictures from it:

The colors are bloomin!

This week has been so gorgeous thus far that I’ve only had to wear a sweatshirt! That’s a big deal because my rain jacket was becoming a nuisance and we needed a break. My favorite part of the warmer weather are all of the colorful trees! These past couple of days I’ve had to stop and smell the flowers while also pulling out my phone so that I could share with you our beautiful areas!

Pets!

It’s always fun having animals around, especially when you have a pet back home away from college. I have the good fortune of being allowed to have a rabbit live in my house and a land lord that lives under us with two cats. Here are just some pictures of my bunny Louis and one of the cats I played with the other day, Makai (my housemate Lexi likes to call it Gravy)

And here’s Makai, who quickly established herself as a house guest, especially when she peaked her head into my room to see how I was doing…

I will have more to contribute, especially because Louis does strange things everyday, and Makai is always around

Is That the Sun…?

This gallery contains 6 photos.

The week back from spring break was welcomed by a gorgeous teaser of spring. It was sunny, everyone was in a great mood, some were in shorts, and everyone had dry shoes. I of course had to take pictures, so … Continue reading

Spring Spring Spring! Part I

It’s spring semester and everything has been going a million miles an hour! Having it be the second semester of my junior year is very exciting but also nerve wracking because I have to leave so soon. But I will enjoy it while it lasts, which I have been doing thus far! Let me start from the beginning.

After spending a month with my family it was time to come back to Puget Sound to my house and my roommates and my rabbit, Louis.

After being in Tacoma for a couple of weeks it was time to say bye to a few friends who were off to go abroad. Josie went to Prague, Alex went to Tanzania, and Lauren, my freshman year roommate, is in China. I’ve been able to see a ton of pictures from their trips so far and briefly talked to them through social media and they seem to be having great times while learning a lot!

But after the sad goodbyes, it was time to have a very interesting few months in Tacoma and Washington. We had a night of heavy snow that lasted one weekend

1897724_10203489598303276_1831864404_n I performed in Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues for the first time. It was such a great experience working with such passionate and talented women! The show is always Valentine’s Day weekend and is two nights every year, so if you’re in Tacoma or are a Logger, definitely see it!

After the first performance of The Vagina Monologues, we went to the new 24 hour Mexican restaurant called Memos on 6th Ave. Let me tell you, we also went the next night. If you ever go (which you should because it’s affordable, the people who work there are very nice, and it’s delicious!) I suggest the Washington Burrito. It is like a Carne Asada Burrito with potatoes in it, and if you feel fancy and careless, you should add sour cream and guacamole to make it that much better! We have been about 5 times in the last month…

I have also had the great luck that my housemates Andrea and Chloe are employed by our radio station KUPS 90.1 Tacoma The Sound, allowing me to participate in events sponsored by the station. Andrea is in charge of the Street Team, who is in charge of making flyers, buttons, design lighters, and now candles to sell while promoting KUPS in the SUB and also the publication of KUPS’s new music zine, The Stump. Andrea has done a great job to make being a part of the team fun, by hosting the meetings with snacks, potluck brunches, pizza parties, and craft days to make merchandise.

I started serving in the Diner, which has been interesting. Everyone is very nice which makes the job not very hard. I never thought I wanted to work there, but I love it now!

So far, it has been a semester full of studying, trips to Seattle, and appreciating the environment in which I live. Part II will be published after spring break! Stay tuned!

A Little Litho

This past week, I finished my second print making project: lithography! This was the first time I’ve ever worked with litho, and let me tell you, it was QUITE a process. Here’s the first sketch of my print idea!

bomb

The first step was graining the stone, in other words, literally removing a layer of limestone by hand. To do this, we used several different grains of sand and a lot of physical labor. Litho stones are reused over and over again, and some are super old. As a matter of fact, here at Puget Sound we have litho stones that were once used in printing the Seattle Times! (Before printing presses… that’s old!) We grain the stones to remove the image from the artist prior.

graining

Next step: drawing my image on the stone. This is done either with special types of “grease crayons”, which attract the oil in the ink used for printing, or with autographic ink. I chose to use autographic ink because instead of providing shading variations like with crayon, I wanted a simply black and white image.

inking

Here’s what it looked like all fully inked on my stone!

Finally, PRINTING! This part of the process went much faster with two people, so I had a friend of mine help out and I returned the favor when it was her turn to print.

printing

I (of course) ended up covered in ink again. My hands looked like someone possessed by the power of black magic.

IMG_4822

After MANY hours of artistic labor, I had a full 11 print edition! Here’s what my best print ended up looking like.

IMG_4874

I’m quite pleased with the outcome, considering the amount of time and effort put into something I’d never done! I’m looking forward to maybe experimenting with color lithography sometime, but for now… I’ll stick with screen printing!!

Home Suite Home

This year, I some how was fortunate enough to land a spot in the brand new residence hall on campus, Commencement Hall! I live in a suite with nine other people where we each have our own single rooms and a central living area. The way this hall is set up is meant to emulate off campus housing/apartment style living, and it’s been really nice! I love having my own room and living with other people. (Plus we get free laundry..score!)

Here’s some pictures of our suite setup! (Pun definitely intended)

When you first enter the suite, you come into the (full!) kitchen/dining area. It’s really spacious and quite nice!IMG_7358 IMG_7368

Walking past the kitchen leads into the cozy lounge!IMG_7365 IMG_7364

My suitemates were even nice enough to let me keep my goofy metal art in on the lovely bay windowsill.IMG_7367

Then there’s my room! Here’s a little look into my personal home.IMG_7361 IMG_7362 IMG_7363And finally, the wonderful view from my window. I get some great sunsets!IMG_7357
