Poetry!

This semester Olivia and I are in the same poetry class, so we thought we might post some of the poems we’ve been working on in class. Here’s one of the first ones I wrote for an assignment called the “narrative/place” poem. It’s based off my multiple trips to June Lake with my parents every summer. Still a work in progress!

June

Through the sage brush

and wildflowers,

along the softly

speaking

stream,

past the trembling aspens

of a thousand carved out names,

lies a place out of a dream.

Where tiny hooves

line dusty paths,

and the air is crisp

and

thin,

over beds of fallen needles

is where summer oft begin.

Where green reeds sway

on silver shores,

and gulls chatter from

the

sky,

the trees sprout hooks and sinkers

that taunt the passers-by.

It’s here among

the quiet pines,

where jays stretch their wings

and

land,

that love, laughter, and lessons,

start with fishing rod in hand.

Old Tacoma with an old friend

One of my best friends since my freshman year, Michael Mulay ’15, and I spent this last Sunday exploring Old Tacoma. Since I’m always the one behind the camera, I wanted to take series of photos with Michael backed by some interesting spots around town. I only snapped a couple pictures, but I like how they turned out so I might take a few more on another excursion!

Senior Year!!!

It’s been a while since I have written a post, but that’s because I used this summer to prepare myself emotionally and mentally for my SENIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE! It is strange being back at school knowing that in 8 months I’ll be walking across a stage and accepting a diploma.

I was welcomed home with new pets:

I was also welcomed back by a very ecstatic Louis the rabbit:

Starting senior year has been a struggle, with advanced classes and friends working on their theses. But it’s nice to have my friends from freshman year still by my side

Preliminary Prints

Getting back into the college-life groove means fun and friends, but also homework. Luckily for me, my homework is often doing what I love most: art! This semester I’m taking another printmaking class, this time in relief and intaglio.

Our first project was a little experiment with a material called “speedy cut”, which is sort of like a soft, porous rubber. (However, it smells like my father’s office back home, and since he’s a polymer chemist, I’m sure it’s something a little more fancy that just that!) I sketched a quick design and transferred it onto my little block with tracing paper and began cutting! Here’s some pictures of the process of my first linocut relief print!

With relief printing, you have to work in reverse. The area that you carve away is left white, while the remaining negative spaces are what collect and print ink, sort of like a stamp. You also have to be sure to mirror your image when you carve it so that when it prints, it comes out facing the direction you want. (This is especially important with text, but can lead to some pretty funny mishaps) I went on to print a few more since this was just a test on some cheap newsprint paper, but I was really happy with how it came out!

Starting the year with a bang

Friday, the 9th, was LogJam–the annual gathering on Todd field to celebrate the start of a new year and provide an opportunity for students new and old to sign up for clubs. The field was flooded with people, and there was free Puget Sound swag everywhere. I’m actually quite bummed I didn’t make it in time to the ASUPS table to snag one of the free sweatshirts featuring an adorable design of Grizz (our mascot, who was parading around as well, by the way) by junior Leanne Gan.ASUPSshirt1

Among the many tables and banners and students and flags, my friends found some fabulous photo cut outs to pose with.

As the festivities were coming to a close and the sun began to set, it was time for one final surprise: a dazzling fireworks show courtesy of ASUPS (the Associated Students of Puget Sound)! No better way to show off our school’s colors than by blasting them into the sky.

The show, and LogJam itself, were an awesome way to start the new year. Here’s the starting the year with a bang!

Summer memories + the start of year three!

It’s that time of year again: I’m back in Tacoma and halfway through my first week of classes! This past summer was one of the best so far, but it’s definitely good to be back on campus enjoying friends, the sun (while it lasts), and the simplicity of syllabus week. Thought I’d share some pictures from summer as a nod to all the good times and a starting place for this year’s blog posts!

A couple of weekends ago, our greek house Pi Beta Phi had a formal and I got to go! My friend Kelly, who is a member of the sorority, took me with her to the Marriott for a night of dancing.

My roommate Bianca is also part of Pi Phi and brought our other roommate Lexi with her. The theme was prom and we put on dresses and make up and heels and had a girls night on the dance floor.

Picnic at Point Defiance

Spring weather is here, finally! Or at least, most of the time. With Tacoma weather it’s hard to tell if it will stay sunny or start to pour! To take advantage of the recent sun, some of my friends and I decided to take a little trip to beautiful Point Defiance Park for a picnic!

We wandered down to the coast and picked a pretty spot where the forest gave us plenty of shade. It was a lovely view!

Monoprinting!

Just in time for Easter, I finished my first ever monoprint in my print making class! A monoprint is essentially a one of a kind print, done in a way that it can only be printed once (sometimes twice, this is called a “ghost print”). Creating a monoprint can be done by lots of different processes, with all sorts of materials. For my print, I chose to use screen printing. Screen monoprints can be done with TONS of different materials, so long as they’re water soluble–markers, charcoal, graphite, watercolor paint/pencils/crayons, and tons of other stuff to.

One of my very favorite mediums is watercolor, so I decided to use that for my monoprint. Here’s what my design looked like painted on my screen!

IMG_5142

Once the paint was dry, I used transparent screen printing ink to print it. The first pull came out a little interesting… it printed the outlines of the water color because that was what dried first!

IMG_5145

Since this is not quite what I had in mind for my print, I decided to pull a few ghost prints as well. The second one came out much better, I think! Definitely darker, at least, because the paint had time to loosen with the transparent ink soaking into it.

IMG_5146

Just to experiment, I decided to pull a third print as well. It ended up being my favorite! I really like the way it came out. The details came through really well and although the colors are lighter, I like how soft they look.

IMG_5148

I have two more prints to do for this assignment, so hopefully they’ll come out just as well! I’ll be sure to post them when they’re done. Frankly, I’m quite fawn’d of this print!

…wow I’m sorry that was horrible. Forgive me.
