Fontastic

Excuse the goofy and way awful pun of a title, but really, this post is just about fancy text!

My most recent digital imaging project is surrounding typography–art that involves printing type–fun letter play! We were to pick a quote or selection of text that had some sort of meaning to it, find a typeface that caught our eye and captured our meaning, and then arrange the text in three ways: one simply for legibility, one for expressiveness, and one for visual effect (including images). The quote I chose is by one of my biggest inspirations, author of the Lord of the Rings series, J.R.R. Tolkien. Here’s part A!

Tolkien2I messed around with a couple different takes on the expressive step of part B. Here’s my favorite:

Tolkien

And for the third step, involving imagery, I did quite a bit of experimenting and ended up with this:

COMPASStype

Next, I’ve decided to take the third piece into the real word! I’ll be creating a 3d compass with the text for the quote inside. I’ll be sure to upload a picture when I’m done, it’s a lot of work but it should come out pretty cool! (I hope!)

A Little Mickey Magic

I was musing over some ideas for new blog posts, when I remembered that I’d once drafted one with some of my favorite pictures from Disneyland but never actually posted it! Not exactly school related, but it’s a place I adore being and taking pictures of, so why not share that with you guys? (ps. it’s worth noting that I’m listening to the soundtrack for Pixar’s Up as I write this)

Here are some of my favorite Disney moments over the years:

Paradise

I am a dog person. Funny, considering my last post was about kittens, I know. Well my companion, my valentine, my hide-and-seek partner, my fuzzy four-legged best friend, was my dog, Taz.

After fourteen years of bike rides and otter pops and paw-high-fives and tail chasing, I’m sad to say Taz passed away at the end of last semester. Though he is no longer physically here, he will always be a large part of my life and always in my heart; I am eternally grateful for love, laughs, and pure, unbridled joy he provided and greeted me with every day. Because of the impact he had on my life, he’s been a large part of my inspiration in art. I actually based my most recent digital art assignment off of him–in my digital imaging class, we were to create a completely new and “recontexualized” image by synthesizing other images. So I chose to create “Doggy Heaven”:

PeckenpaughM2

Yes, it’s a little corny, but I wanted to create an image that you couldn’t help but smile upon seeing. I took all his favorite things–jollyballs, milkbones, rawhides, butterflies, even a jar of Jiff–and created what I thought his paradise might look like. I was tired of people feeling sad upon hearing that my best friend is no longer with us, because I myself can’t help but smile at his memory. Instead of being sad he’s gone, I smile because he was here. How can I not, when I remember such a goofy,

adorable,

and wonderful friend?

Rest in peace, buddy, Love you always, thank you for everything.

How to de-stress

Getting a little overwhelmed by midterms and work and everything else? Need a break from the crazy college lifestyle? I’ve got the perfect solution: KITTENS.

IMG_5859

A good friend of mine invited me up to Lacey, WA, to see the new kittens her boyfriend’s cat just had! There’s really nothing to make you forget being stressed like a bunch of tiny little mewing balls of fluff! Here’s some pictures to help you guys all de-stress too. Horray for the power of kittens!

When I Miss Home…

All I have to do, is watch this video.

Some Poetry

In my freshman seminar class, Shaping the Shadow, we’re currently reading Mary Oliver’s collection of nature poems called American Primitive. We’re also writing our own poems about nature by selecting an image from the natural world and presenting it in a poem that brings the image from strange to familiar. I thought I’d share what I wrote for the assignment. (I’ve never been a fan of sharing my writing, so this is a big step!) Enjoy (:

“Roots”

I like to think
that all trees know each other.
To us they are strange, strong, and silent,
never breathing, always alive.
They speak in whispers
wind through trembling, shimmering leaves
a language so foreign
even the song birds cannot translate.
But beneath the earth,
their roots tangle and twist
deep into the soft, sweet soil,
meeting among the drowsy pillbugs
and effervescent ants
to breathe and braid and bind in the dark
like children clad in moss and mist,
holding hands
behind the backs of the oblivious.

In the Mood

After moving on from digital drawing and painting in my Digital Imaging class, our next project was digital photography. We were to pick a subject, human or not, and take and edit three pictures in which we utilized lighting to convey a mood. I chose to shoot my good friend and neighbor Sophie Schwartz ’16, here’s how her final photos came out!

English Major Stuff

I just thought I’d share a poem we looked at in my Intro to English Studies class. It’s by Pablo Neruda. It is an ode to salt, as the title, Ode to Salt, tells us, but shows it in a different light than we would think. It’s very lovely and interesting, so enjoy!

Ode to Salt by Pablo Neruda

This salt
in the salt cellar
I once saw in the salt mines.
I know
you won’t
believe me
but
it sings
salt sings, the skin
of the salt mines
sings
with a mouth smothered
by the earth.
I shivered in those
solitudes
when I heard
the voice
of
the salt
in the desert.
Near Antofagasta
the nitrous
pampa
resounds:
a
broken
v oice,
a mournful
song.

In its caves
the salt moans, mountain
of buried light,
translucent cathedral,
crystal of the sea, oblivion
of the waves.
And then on every table
in the world,
salt,
we see your piquant
powder
sprinkling
vital light
upon
our food.
Preserver
of the ancient
holds of ships,
discoverer
on
the high seas,
earliest
sailor
of the unknown, shifting
byways of the foam.
Dust of the sea, in you
the tongue receives a kiss
from ocean night:
taste imparts to every seasoned
dish your ocean essence;
the smallest,
miniature
wave from the saltcellar
reveals to us
more than domestic whiteness;
in it, we taste finitude.

I heart Oly

Last weekend, my housemates and I took an impromptu trip down to Washington’s capital city of Olympia.

When we arrived, we checked out the giant REI at the mall, where my housemates bought themselves some fancy Klean Kanteens. We then parked outside of one of the many hip tattoo parlors and made our way to Old School Pizzeria for lunch. We then went to Dumpster Values thrift shop, Rainy Day Record store where we purchased some LPs for our now 3 turntables, Psychic Sister vintage shop where I found and fell in love and purchased a beautiful, golden dress, and an antique store whose name I have forgotten (whoops, but it was so cute). We checked out Cafe Vida, which is also in Seattle where our very own Diversions gets its coffee and trains its staff. After we walked around in the bizarrely sunny yet rainy day, we drove over to look at the state capital. After getting some pictures, it was off to Tacoma, seeing that it was a Sunday and we realized that we had overstayed our visit when all of the stores closed at 5.

On our way

It Runs in the Family

One of the first things to know about this campus is that everyone values their music more than almost anything. And saying that, people also value Beyonce. But it’s her sister Solange who has caught my attention and I just love this song and performance and I want to share it with the world!
