Mom Knows Best

I’ve been stressing out pretty bad lately. It’s almost the end of the year, and EVERYTHING is due… so I really needed a little pick me up! Guess who knew the best thing to send me was a video of baby animals sleeping? My super awesome mom. Enjoy, and don’t stress!

Fresh and Witty

Video making runs in the family! My cousin, Christopher, designs logos and makes commercials for companies. He graduated with a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Long Beach, California. I was just sent a link to the latest commercial he designed–a musical commercial for Fresh & Easy markets! Pretty clever, I’d say.

Everything is Cooler in Space

Upon one of my usual late-night-weekend-webernet-browsings, I came across this.

Thank you, Internet.

Simplicitea

We’re trying something a little experimental in my 3D art class right now. Our assignment was to take 60 pictures documenting the passing of time and put them together in a 1 minute movie. I chose to take pictures of a trip to one of my favorite cafes right off campus. I give you, Simplicitea!

Killer Queens

This past Friday, the Queer Alliance here on campus hosted the 11th annual Drag Show! It was hosted by a FABULOUS queen from Seattle, La Saveona Hunt, and all proceeds from ticket/shirt/poster sales went to Puget Sound’s LGBTQ Leadership Scholarship. The show featured some fantastic talent, including the hostess!

Drag queens and kings alike gave incredibly entertaining lip-syncing performances, sporting fancy outfits and some very punny names–Miss Chievious, Faye Cial, Milky Brown, Sirius Lee, and more! There were even some quick changes between queens because of costume jealousy.

The hostess wanted Faye’s dress… so she borrowed it!

Puget Sound’s only co-ed A Capella group also performed, out of drag, but they were awesome too! They pulled out a love song on the spot, per the request of La Saveona!

Another professional queen, a good friend of La Saveona, performed a few exciting numbers as well–Anita Brick!

I had a blast with my friends and I’m so proud to be a part of such a supportive and accepting community. Can’t wait to go again next year!

Cloud 9 and a Lu’au

This past weekend, I spent my time watching my friends perform their hearts out!

On Friday evening, I went to see the show Cloud 9, a play set in England about a family with very interesting relationships among themselves and friends. It was a part of the Senior Theater Festival and starred one of my best friends and his luscious facial hair, Jordan Moeller ’15.

He played a hypocritical, strict, and diplomatic father in the first act, and then an adorable little British 3 year old girl in the second. It was a very interesting, funny, but interesting show.

The next night, I was offered tickets for Puget Sound’s Hu’i O Hawai’i (Hawaiin Club)’s 43rd annual Lu’au! I hadn’t gone last year, and it was so fun! They had dances from Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand’s Maoris, and more! I was able to go to the post show celebration, where they served DELICIOUS Hawaiian food, like pulled pork from the pig they roasted in a pit dug outside of the Todd/Phibbs dorm. Here are some pictures, I apologize for the fuzziness of the quality, but it was fun and good, I promise!

Important

Just watched this video, it’s a trailer for what looks like an incredible movie about the misrepresentation of women and sexualized roles/images in the media. This is a super important issues presented in a very intelligent way. It is required that all humans watch it, ASAP!

Through the Eyes of the Artists

We just finished our critique on our typography assignment in my digital imaging class, and I was SO impressed with some of the work done in my class! I simply had to share a few examples with you guys. Check ’em out!

The expressive part b of the assignment by Megan Hatasaka '15. The quote she chose is Italian for "He who seeks shall find"!

An Unexpected Journey

Friday ended up being quite an adventure filled day.

It started out like any other, hanging out with friends in the lounge, deciding what we were going to to that day. All of a sudden, in bursts our friend Reed Glover, with this big guy!

Meet Gandalf. He literally ran into Reed on the street when she was taking a walk, but had no identification other than the Home Again tag on his collar. Reed ended up standing on the street corner in the rain for a half hour trying to get a hold of the dog’s owner. She called the Home Again service and gave them his ID number, but when they tried to reach the phone number they had on file for him, it was disconnected! They told her his name was Gandalf, and gave her the number for the local Humane Society.

When she tried calling, she discovered it was closed for the day. So, she decided to bring her new friend back to campus and out of the rain until she could figure out what to do.

Now, people often walk their dogs around the Puget Sound campus and the students love it, and this was no exception! Soon, we had a group of helpers working to towel off Gandalf and give him some water and LOTS of love.

Drying him off!

Once we’d given him a chance to calm down and dry off, we helped Reed devise a plan to get him back where he belonged. She and another friend of ours, Paul Goudarzi-Fry, decided to walk back down where Reed originally found him and knock on some doors to see if anyone knew of or had lost a dog, while I stayed behind and kept him company.

I mean...look at that face

I mean…look at that face

Once they’d found some neighbors who recognized pictures of the dog and said the owner wasn’t home, Reed and Paul came back to campus and we set out once again to drop Gandalf off with the neighbors until the owner came home. But, on our way there, a woman drove by with her window rolled down and yelled, “THAT’S MY DOG! OH MY GOSH I LOVE YOU GUYS!!” After much cheering and horrahs, we followed her car and found Gandalf’s true home. Turns out she’d just gotten back from the Humane Society looking for him!

She was ecstatic to have him back and couldn’t stop thanking us. She explained that the number out of service belonged to her husband, who was in the army, and offered to let us come visit Gandalf whenever we wanted. Full of a warm fuzzy feeling and with uncontrollable smiles, we said our goodbyes to Gandalf and walked a few blocks to a coffee shop to take a rest. We’d all made a new friend (especially Reed!).

So what did I do this weekend? I met Gandalf. And he took us on a very unexpected journey.

A striking resemblance, wouldn’t you say?

Some More Poetry

Here’s another quick nature poem. Wrote this one as a draft back when I was brainstorming for the assignment I wrote the other one for! A little more somber, and I’m not quite as fond of this one as the other, but here it is.

Untitled

How strange the still and silent life
hidden in the Cimmerian shade of night.
Casting shadows of murk and myth
by light of her pallid, wintry face.
Cloaked in quiet
obscure, yet understanding,
she floods her lonely kingdom
with gentle, forgiving light
and meets my gaze
with unseeing ivory eyes.
I find solace in her silence
Made whole by the assuring nod
of the motionless moon in the night.
