Inspiration for the Day: Street Photography

As a photographer, I love seeing this kind of stuff pop up on my news feed. This is a really interesting and inspiring street photographer who pairs complete strangers up for intimate photographs that suggest relationships. Seems odd and uncomfortable? The results will probably surprise you! Give it a look!

Wilhelm Scream

KUPS is awesome!

Monday morning, I woke up to email the head of promotions as quickly as possible and subsequently won tickets to see electronic musician James Blake! The concert was one of the best shows I’ve ever experienced! His voice and words and face just made the night so magical!

Before James hit the stage, L.A. dj/ producer Nosaj Thing opened the show. He played a really fun show in the dark that everyone was swaying to, bobbing their head with every drum kick. He’s produced for some pretty big artists, such as Kid Cudi, and is touring with JAMES FREAKING BLAKE! Here’s Nosaj performing live for KEXP Seattle:

But the concert was so amazing, from his upbeat starter of I Never Learnt to Share to his beautiful encore of Measurements, I felt like I was listening to his recordings. He is almost better live than the songs you can hear on his album that have been edited, because he plays all of his music live instead of using pre-recordings. Here are a few pictures I took while listening to his sweet voice!

Late Night Walk

Here at Puget Sound, one of my favorite things is taking late night walks with my friends. Why? Because it’s like a new place to explore when the moon is out!

It also provides for some fun, artsy fartsy pictures.

Seasons

I am aware that I have not posted in a while, but let me tell you,, school in 2013 has kept me busier than I have ever been in my life. Even though I’ve been reading a million pages everyday, I have had time to stop and notice the beautiful changes our city has been going through. Here are a few pictures from my instagram of walks around my neighborhood and foggy days on campus:

It’s time to be SONGING!

Kid History: The most genius thing to grace Youtube in it’s short existence. If you are familiar with Drunk History, the videos where comedians get drunk and tell a story from American history while other famous actors, like Zooey Deschanel, Jack Black, Michael Cera, Don Cheadle, act out what the comedians are saying, then you’ll understand this series.

Well Kid History is a bit different. It’s a family called the Roberts who have a traditionally large Mormon family consisting of about 8 siblings, meaning there is a pretty large number of children. They tell the kids stories of when the four youngest, Randy, John, Brett, and Dave, were little and then have the children repeat them back. The brothers and their friend Richard Sharrah act out what the children say making for a hilarious and cute experience. I’m not doing it justice by explaining it, so here’s an example of what they do.

Commencement

This last weekend was the premiere of the student written, produced, directed, and acted film, Commencement. I was asked to do the design for the movie poster, and was thrilled to see my work in the school’s paper, The Trail! (Read it here!) Since this was my first time doing this sort of graphic design and the film had a lot of student work put into it, I thought it would definitely be worth sharing. (Recognize a certain actress?)

Proof it was in the paper! (:

Sweet Seattle

Some photos from the visits I’ve made to Seattle. I’m very happy and lucky to be living so close to such a lively and vibrant city.

From Sketchbook to Blog: Songbird

Since I just made that post about my Halloween costume from Bioshock Infinite, I thought it only fitting to share one of the latest things I’ve been obsessed with drawing! Lately, I’ve been drawing one of the most intricately designed and awesome characters from the same game: Songbird! In the game, he acts as Elizabeth’s (the character I was for Halloween) protector, and is one of the most formidable enemies/allies. He’s often a favorite of those who have played the game!

Here’s a picture for reference, followed by my little sketch. Might color it later, we’ll see. Enjoy! (:

And here’s my sketch…

Artist of the Day: My Hero!

Today’s art I found incredibly inspiring is fan art of one of my very favorite things: Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli movies! In case you don’t know who that guy is, he’s pretty much my idol. He’s been creating BEAUTIFUL animated movie since years before I was born. He’s incredible talented, and down right adorable. I mean, look at this happy, classy guy.

I’ve been wanting to make a post (or maybe even a video!) about Miyazaki for a long while now. He’s always been my biggest inspiration when it comes to art; be it drawing, designing, or animating, I strive to be as creative as he is when I work.

I’ve seen nearly all of his movies more than once; some I spent a solid 2 or 3 weeks watching every night because I loved them so much. I find all of them fascinating and charming and down-right wonderful, but I’d have to say my favorites are Spirited Away,

Howl’s Moving Castle,

and most of all, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke are close seconds!

(Who am I kidding, I love them all)

Hayao Miyazaki is truly a creative genius, and my hero. Sadly, he retired this year. (It was a very melancholy day for me indeed!) However, there is a movie in production about his life, and his son, Goro, is already on his way to following in his father’s footsteps! Of the movies he’s directed, I particularly enjoy Tales from Earthsea.

Anyway, I’m always finding beautiful fan art of these enchanting movies, so I thought it only appropriate to share what it is that made me what to be an artist in the first place! I’m unsure of the artist, but these pieces were too beautiful not to share. Enjoy! (and know that I’m obsessing over how dang talented you are, oh wise anonymous artist!)

While it’s very sad that Miyazaki has stopped producing these beautiful movies, I have hope! I believe that even more charming stories and characters will come forth from Studio Ghibli as Miyazaki’s son continues the legacy, bringing life to fantastic worlds, ideas, and art!
