Saturday in Seattle

The good thing about living in Tacoma is that if you want to get away for just a day, you can hop into a car or on a bus or in a cab (but that’s very expensive) and take a 45 minute trip north to Seattle. And that’s exactly what my friends and I did recently. My housemates and I set off in the late afternoon to Pike’s Place where I made a bee line for my favorite place in the area, Left Bank Books, naturally.

Pikes Place Market

Pikes Place Market

From the top floor of Left Bank Books

From the top floor of Left Bank Books

This book store is not like other book stores. It’s full of zines and books about social justice and posters of things that I don’t even know what they are! It holds great sentiment to me, because it was one of the first places I went on my very first trip to the Pacific Northwest. I remember I had bought a book from there for a project that I was doing on race and identity, a book that was easy to find because they have a section up against a wall labeled along the lines of “race and ethnicity”. I could hang out in there forever, but, it’s pretty small, so I don’t.

After a bout in the book store, we walked over to Urban Outfitters so that I could use up a gift card before we made our way to a paper store called Paper Hammer, that was awesome! It was basically a printmakers dream, and my housemate Andrea was in love, seeing as that’s her major! Here’s their website to look at the kind of things they sell:

http://paper-hammer.com/

After Paper Hammer, we found ourselves famished from walking around. We couldn’t decide until Andrea said “We’re right by Biscuit Bitch!”

Yes, Biscuit Bitch.

But this place, this establishment built on biscuits and gravy, provided me with one of the best meals that I’ve had in a very long time.

I felt like I could eat a horse, but afterwards, I thought that I would good for days! I ordered the Gritty Scrambled Cheesy Bitch with sausage gravy and two slabs of ham added. Oh my gosh, just thinking about it is making my mouth water. But so, this meal, it was biscuits with the sausage gravy that was topped with scrambled eggs, cheese, and garlic grits. I wanted some meat, and I that ordering ham would be sensible, until the guy cooking said “Oh, these are some of the thickest slices of ham” and dropped the monster in front of me. Accompanied with lemonade, it was the best biscuits and gravy I have ever experienced, I mean, that one can on the west coast.

We met up with two more friends, who also ordered colossal meals, and then went back to Pike’s. We founds ourselves in Post Alley with the world famous gum wall.

We threw some gum at the wall, but could only take all of the germs, we went to the underbelly of the market and went to random little shops. Andrea even got her fortune read by a psychic that could have been right out of the Tom Hanks film Big.

eh, close enough.

We then went to Pikes Brewery so that our 21 year old friends could drink a beer and we waited patiently outside, just wasting time for the meter to run up it’s time. It was a great day that left us tired and satisfied, like every visit I’ve had to Seattle.

Sasquatch: Real AND Magical

Every year around the world, music festivals are set up in massive fields and parks and, in some cases, gorges. Yes, gorges. Like Sasquatch Music Festival in George, WA. This music festival is different from many due to its beautiful landscape and the Northwestern camaraderie that is so unique to this great area.

Memorial day weekend houses the 4 day festival in which people from all over the Northwest, including British Columbia and Alberta, come together and live in tents and listen to music. I have been to Lollapalooza in Chicago, which was three days and would end at 11 pm and I would go back to my aunt and uncle’s 3 story house in Lincoln Park every night to rest up for the next day. This is not how you do Sasquatch. You live on campgrounds with your good friends, and if you’re lucky, you are joined by crazy Canadian neighbors. We ate out of the back of our cars, usually bagel sandwiches or burgers, and would just sit and wait until the first band we wanted to see would go on stage.

Living at Sasquatch is another world, it’s an adventure all in itself. My housemate, Andrea, and I slept in her 6 person tent for four nights just the two of us, one of the few luxuries of our trip. Because The Gorge Amphitheater is in Eastern Washington, on the other side of the Cascades, our surroundings were dry desert and farmland, causing extreme weather changes. We would go to sleep, freezing, bundled under blankets and our mummy sleeping bags, waking up sweating and running out of the steaming bubble our tent would become. But it was awesome because all we could do is sit and talk and bond and laugh and wait. We had to rest up before our long walk to the stages, a trek that was about the same time period as a short show. But oh, it was worth it.

People keep asking me what my favorite show was, but I can’t choose one. The shows were all exceptional and I couldn’t stop moving at any of them.

Friday:

We wandered over to Red Fang, which was a massive mosh pit, something I don’t like. When it finished, we waited for Japandroids, but our Canadian friend, Matt, started another mosh pit, so my friend and I took it as a great opportunity to take a nap. I then saw The Arctic Monkeys, where the lead was suave and charming and held a Johnny Cash type persona with a thick Northern English accent. And then the moment I had been waiting for came, Vampire Weekend, a show that caused me to almost cry several times. I felt like I was in high school again and it was amazing. We then ended the night with Baauer and “The Harlem Shake”, a great day indeed.

Saturday:

A longer day with a longer list of acts-

  • The tail end of Michael Kiwanuka
  • Devendra Banhart (swoon)
  • A laugh with Nick Offerman
  • Bloc Party
  • The XX
  • Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur
  • Finally, an awesome dance party at Laidback Luke, where I ran into Michael Kiwanuka who I think was a bit overwhelmed with our very energetic dancing at the back of the techno tent

Sunday:

  • Danny Brown, the craziest rapper in the world. On the way, we ran into Seattle rap duo, Brothers From Another, who are friends with the KUPS members and play house shows for us.
  • Tallest Man on Earth
  • Dropkick Murphys, a Boston band that does Irish punk, but I lost a shoe and had to crowd surf out of the moshing mess
  • Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
  • Earl Sweatshirt with Syd the Kyd
  • Ended the night with a very fun show of Grimes
Earl Sweatshirt with a horse head mask

Last but not least, Monday:

  • Chvrches
  • Comedian Mike Birbiglia, who my friend met and then accidentally complimented him on another comedians joke (oops, but it’ll be a good addition to his show)
  • Dirty Projectors
  • Toro Y Moi, where my friends and I were able to be at the front for
  • Disclosure, where we were also at the front because we stayed planted after Toro Y Moi
  • We chilled out at Alt-J
  • We danced around at Ariel Pink
  • We then ended our 2013 Sasquatch experience with The Postal Service, an awesome blast from the past

It was a great weekend, a great way to spend my last days as a teenager (I turned 20 a couple days later), and a great way to send off the friends who are studying abroad next semester/year. I would say for Puget Sound students who are able to save up, it’s worth experiencing at least once!

This definitely made way for an awesome summer!

I Heart Vampires

Not really, but Vampire Weekend…The one thing I fangirl for.

tumblr_mm3jpc4jJv1sp2yifo1_500

Chris Baio (bass), Chris Thompson (percussion), Ezra Koenig (vocals, lead guitar), Rostam Batmanglij (everything)

Ezra Koenig, the lead singer, is my modern day Paul McCartney. I recently just saw them at Sasquatch Music Festival, and I felt like I was 16 again. It was my second time seeing them live, and like the first time, I had to choke back tears of happiness. Oh man, that sounds dramatic, but their smart lyrics, funny tweets, and sharp looks, these friends who met while attending Columbia University just kill me!

Here, see for yourself!

Video for Oxford Comma from their first, self titled “Vampire Weekend” album (Warning: There is profanity)

Video for ‘Cousins’ from their sophomore album, “Contra”

My friends and I were ecstatic when Contra came out. We waited with anticipation, and then went to their concert.

Well, it’s Official…

I’m DONE with my first year of college! The last day of classes was Wednesday, May 9th, and I was lucky enough to have no finals this semester. What I did have, however, were some massive art projects. For my digital imaging class, we were allowed to get creative!

As you guys know, I’m an art major. I’m also a HUGE fan of video games (one of the essays that got me into this college was about that!), and I one day hope to take my art into the video game world as a concept artist. Since we were allowed to pretty much do whatever we wanted for this final project, a very talented friend and I came up with the idea/storyline for a video game and then delegated who should draw concept art for what. I designed and drew concept art for the characters while she did the scenery. I drew character sheets, line art, and a final print for two characters: the protagonist and an enemy. Meet Akio the wolf deity and one of the enemies in the game, Piccolo! Both were done in Photoshop and took me 18+ hours together.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the game’s storyline:

The player takes on the role of Akio, the faithful friend of a powerful goddess who has lost her son, Haru, to an evil rival. Akio sets off on a journey to bring the boy back and travels through fantastical landscapes ranging from cityscapes to waterfall oases to the frozen tundra. As for the battle mechanics of the game, Akio carry’s scrolls (seen in character sheet below) that control several elements that he pulls out with his mouth and tosses upwards to unroll and activate. Upon reaching the forbidden castle where the evil goddess resides, players will notice that Haru seems to actually be happy and treated well, facing players with making the moral choice of bringing him back to his mother or leaving him with the actually-not-so-evil goddess who just wanted something to care for. It’s a bit rough, yes, but the art was sure fun to design!

And here’s the awesome piece my partner, Robin Wilson ’14, did!

Putting all the pieces up on the wall together was really incredible. It was awesome to stand back and see the final product of our hard work! I’m really happy with how it all turned out, and I’ll definitely add it to my portfolio. I’d say my first year of college was definitely a success. Game on!

My not-so-strange addiction

I have come to realize that I, Olivia Perry, love donuts.

from tumblr.com

from tumblr.com

I have become Homer Simpson. I crave them and if one is in my sight, I have to eat it. It’s not my fault. In fact, I know the exact culprit, the source of my ailment:

Legendary Donuts.

It all started one day in the Piano Lounge of the Wheelock Student Center when I was introduced to these donuts. I got to try this glazed donut with glittery, bright pink frosting on it, called the Tinkerbell, and about died. Oh my gosh it was so good! What a glorious day!

After that, I realized: I love donuts. Nay, I am ADDICTED to donuts!

That may be dramatic, but I did go on St. Patrick’s day and purchase 13, including a special green donut.

St. Patty’s day special edition Tinkerbell donut

How it works is that they have three levels of donuts:

Amateur: which include old fashioned, glaze, maple bars, cinnamon, ooo and chocolate glaze on a chocolate cake donut (YUM!)

Famous: This is wear it starts to get real fancy:

Captain Crunch: Vanilla glaze w/ Captain Crunch

Steve Urkel: Glazed sprinkled with nerds

Cookies and Cream: Vanilla glaze covered in crushed Oreo cookies

Albert Einstein: Smothered in chocolate covered w/ coconut

Black and Tan w/ Guiness Beer: We have replaced the water with beer to create a delicious, rich, malty cake doughnut

Charlie Brown: Chocolate cake smothered with peanut butter and drizzled w/chocolate

And now…

LEGENDARY:

Hot Cocoa: Covered in chocolate, filled w/ whipped crème and topped w/ marshmallows

Pig Pen: Chocolate glaze with chocolate cookie crumbs and gummy worm

Elvis: Peanut butter smothered all over and then topped w/ banana chips

Scarlet O’ Hara: Red velvet cake doughnut w/ dollop of creme cheese frosting and a dark chocolate cigarette

Oh, and there are so much more!

Heres the website with the menu and locations and EVERYTHING!

I’m With the Band

Here at Puget Sound, CMN (the Campus Music Network on campus) hosts a recording sesh once a year at a local recording studio. Students can sign up for a recording slot to show off their stuff on their own or with a band. This year, I tagged along with some friends and acted as “unofficial photographer” and got an awesome behind the scenes look at some very talented students at work!
