She steps out of the car and pulls her\u00a0jacket close. She feels something fall on her\u00a0cheek. He gets out on the other side. They walk toward the water together.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s cold.\u201d<\/p>\n
The waves watch them as they approach. They spread a towel.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to rain,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a couple of minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
She yawns. She hasn\u2019t slept much in the past few days. But she doesn\u2019t close her\u00a0eyes because she\u2019s afraid that if she does she\u2019ll fall asleep. And if she falls asleep she\u2019ll miss it. Even without the sun, there\u2019s still the sea and the strands of grass sticking out of the sand.<\/p>\n
She sits with her hands in her pockets. A strand of her hair catches in her mouth. Her hood comes loose.<\/p>\n
She walks toward the sea and stops just short of the water. It washes over the sand and over her shoes and recedes, leaving strips of foam, like tongues of seaweed, on the sand.<\/p>\n
She pulls the watch out of her pocket. There\u2019s rust between the links. She thinks that maybe it counts the fifty-ninth second twice.<\/p>\n
The sea washes over her shoes again. She feels the water seeping in, suffusing her toes like a cloud of tea in a mug. It crawls up the sand and falls away.<\/p>\n
