\u201cWhat for?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an early graduation present.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWant me to open it now or after graduation?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s up to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
She leans back and smiled. \u201cI\u2019ll wait. Want some tea?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSure. I\u2019ll make some hot water.\u201d<\/p>\n
He fills the kettle and puts it on the stove.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want any?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, I\u2019ll have some.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pulls two mugs out of the cabinet. One of them is yellow and green, and its rim is chipped. He runs his finger over the chip. It flakes.<\/p>\n
The other mug is dark blue. The ceramic is uneven and glazed over. It\u2019s cracked in three places, as if it had been dropped and broken, but the cracks have been filled with gold. He runs his fingers over the gold.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n
She walks over and cups the mug with her hands.<\/p>\n
“My friend\u00a0broke this mug a couple years ago. So he\u00a0took the mug and repaired it. I don\u2019t know where he got it done, but he brought it back like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
She puts it down, picks up the kettle, and pours water into the mug. He watches the water rise against the sides of the cup, above the gilded cracks. The mug doesn\u2019t leak.<\/p>\n
She drops a tea bag into the mug, loops the string around the handle, and hands it to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree minutes steep.\u201d<\/p>\n
