{"id":1448,"date":"2015-01-24T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-24T01:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/whatwedo\/?p=1448"},"modified":"2015-01-24T01:58:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-24T01:58:00","slug":"fun-fact-i-am-112-days-away-from-being-a-college-graduate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/whatwedo\/2015\/01\/24\/fun-fact-i-am-112-days-away-from-being-a-college-graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"Fun fact: I am 112 days away from being a college graduate."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we\u2019re done with the first week of classes.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure what I think about this.\u00a0 Do I like the relative security of being a college student?\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 Am I looking forward to adventuring off after graduation?\u00a0 If I weren\u2019t looking forward to it, then I wouldn\u2019t be doing it.\u00a0 So yes.\u00a0 Does that mean I can\u2019t wait for the end of the semester?\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 I try to avoid thinking about it.<\/p>\n<p>On that cheerful note, I think I\u2019m going to talk about the unseasonably warm weather we\u2019ve been having lately.\u00a0 There are bulbs sprouting by the front door of my house, and I\u2019ve spotted a few blossoms outside the library.\u00a0 Man, they\u2019re going to have a hard time in 112 days if it rains like it did at last year\u2019s graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, take two.\u00a0 Classes.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m taking three upper-division English classes, one of which is an internship with the <a href=\"http:\/\/harborhistorymuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gig Harbor History Museum<\/a>, so there will be a lot of reading and writing this semester.\u00a0 I\u2019m also rowing, of course, plus one of the quarter-credit EPDM department classes (which I highly recommend, by the way; they\u2019re a fun way to mix up your course load), plus beginning rock climbing.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been meaning to get into rock climbing for a while, and am really excited that I got into the class in my last semester of college.<\/p>\n<p>Nope, we\u2019re not thinking about that.<\/p>\n<p>What about winter break?\u00a0 I lounged around for a couple of weeks before volunteering for the internal communications department of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a> headquarters in Northern Virginia.\u00a0 Turns out that that was the place to be, because my supervisor introduced me to all sorts of cool people \u2013 the director of a team of three hundred scientists doing coastal research, the chief of the Science Publishing Network, the regional director of the Northwest region, who might have some contacts to help me get a job this summer after I graduate.<\/p>\n<p>Well, so much for not thinking about graduation.\u00a0 In any case, thinking about it is only serving to help me put off homework, which is sort of a necessary component of getting there.\u00a0 Plus, I\u2019ll be rowing 2,300 miles with <a href=\"http:\/\/oarnorthwest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">OAR Northwest<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/rowboatclassroom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adventure: Mississippi River<\/a> expedition this fall, so why should graduation scare me?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we\u2019re done with the first week of classes.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure what I think about this.\u00a0 Do I like the relative security of being a college student?\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 Am I looking forward to adventuring off after graduation?\u00a0 If &hellip;
