New Online Service Desk Available

Technology Services has a new way for the campus community to submit and track technology service requests!

In addition to the usual contact methods (253.879.8585, servicedesk@pugetsound.edu, or by visiting the Tech Center in Collins Memorial Library), campus members can now visit our new Online Service Desk to submit requests for technology support, check the current status of requests, and provide feedback on campus technology topics.

TS will add more features to the Online Service Desk in the coming months, including a “knowledge base” of self-help articles to address common technology questions. The implementation of an automatic inventory of university-owned computers will facilitate better management of the computer replacement cycle and deployment of software updates.

For more information, contact the Technology Service Desk using any of the methods listed above!

Campus Readiness Survey Open to Faculty and Staff

The University of Puget Sound is evaluating the need for a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to possibly replace the Cascade and Banner systems currently in use. An ERP system provides an integrated technology solution for managing internal and external resources, including student information, financial aid, human resources, and financial management.

Puget Sound faculty and staff are asked to help assess the university’s readiness to undertake an ERP implementation by completing the Campus Readiness Survey. Responses will be kept strictly confidential, to be compiled and reviewed by Collegiate Project Services (CPS), the consulting firm conducting the university’s readiness assessment. The survey will be available through Friday, October 1, and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

For more information, visit the CPS project website, or for specific questions, contact internal project manager Aaron Solomon at asolomon@pugetsound.edu or 253.879.3996.

Connect Key Employed on Campus Wireless

Over the past year, TS has utilized a product called SafeConnect on the residence hall network to ensure a safe computing environment for all users. On August 18, we extended this system to cover the university’s entire wireless network.

If connected to the Loggers wireless network with a personal computer, members of the campus community will be prompted to login with Puget Sound credentials in order to download a Connect Key. Once installed, the key ensures connecting computers meet these requirements before accessing the network: 1) automatic updates enabled, 2) anti-virus software running, and 3) no illegal peer to peer programs running.

After this one-time installation, users will find it much more convenient to access the wireless network. For more information, see our page on the Connect Key.

    Guest Wireless Access Available

We are pleased to provide campus guests with open wireless access through the PS-GuestAccess network. This network does not require a login and will not be sufficient for the type of activities pursued by campus members using the more robust Loggers network. But it does allow guests to access Internet resources such as Web-based e-mail, travel information, and any other website they might need while on campus. This service began Wednesday, August 18.

    New Anti-Spam Filter in Place

On Wednesday, August 18, TS began using a new anti-spam/anti-virus e-mail gateway, Microsoft’s Forefront Protection for Exchange (FPE), to filter unwanted messages. FPE replaces the former product used for this purpose, Sophos PureMessage.

We are very pleased to make this change since it provides an easier to use, more reliable, and cost-effective solution for managing e-mail. For more information, see our page on the Anti-Spam Filter.

    New Service Desk Location

The Technology Service Desk has moved from McIntyre Hall to the Tech Center in Collins Memorial Library!

With this move, Technology Services is now able to provide the campus community with a “one-stop shop” for technology assistance. In addition to the Service Desk, the Tech Center houses Educational Technology, Media Services, and the Digital Media Computer Lab, all under the leadership of Cindy Riche.

Please stop by and visit our newly-renovated location. As always, you can still reach us at 253.879.8585 or servicedesk@pugetsound.edu. We’re happy to assist in any way we can!
