{"id":851,"date":"2010-07-10T14:30:56","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T22:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/?p=851"},"modified":"2010-07-10T14:30:56","modified_gmt":"2010-07-10T22:30:56","slug":"lovehate-the-ireland-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/2010\/07\/10\/lovehate-the-ireland-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"LoveHate: The Ireland Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Here are all the things I hate after being here for a month, particularly things that stood out to me today:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) Having to buy your grocery bags and when you forget them, having to\u00a0lug heavy groceries all the way back home in the mugginess&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2) The tiny-ness of everything.\u00a0 Why must everything be so much more expensive and so much smaller??\u00a0 Not cool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3) People never move out of the way here.\u00a0 You will run into at least 100 people a day I swear, at least if you walk as much as I do.\u00a0 And I thought Americans were rude.<\/p>\n<p>4) Nothing is open past 6:30 pm (except for pubs).<\/p>\n<p>5) Everyone here is &#8220;Catholic,&#8221; but no one really believes or follows their suppossed beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>6) Psychology here is a lot less respected.\u00a0 Also not cool, they need to get crackin&#8217; and get more serious!<\/p>\n<p>7) Since I now have work experience here, I can honestly say that more laid-back is not necessarily better, but rather you still sit in an office all day and are even more bored because you have either nothing to do or something very undirected to do.<\/p>\n<p>8 ) The\u00a0diffused\u00a0Irish culture of Dublin.\u00a0 All\u00a0English speakers pretty much and such a mix of people that the Irish culture is lost in the city.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>9) Terrible, if any at all, customer service.\u00a0 WOWOWOW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Well.\u00a0 That&#8217;s really all I can think of&#8230;Now for the happy ending!\u00a0 I love&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) The countryside of Ireland.\u00a0 I would move there in a heartbeat if it was a real option right now.\u00a0 It is exactly what you&#8217;d expect, typical green beauty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2) The word &#8220;craic.&#8221;\u00a0 I\u00a0will\u00a0be saying\u00a0&#8220;good\u00a0craic&#8221; for years to come, just you wait and see.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3) The chocolate is so much better here!\u00a0 My new favorite candy bar is Cadbury Snack&#8230;delicious!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been getting it wayyyy too often&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>4) Their love for\u00a0football\u00a0(aka soccer) is so much more exciting!\u00a0 And in general, hurling, gaelic football and rugby and way more fun to watch!\u00a0 Entertaining to the end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>5) The fact that everything is so walkable here (and bikeable too, obviously!).<\/p>\n<p>6) The beautiful buildings, churches everywhere and giant, old buildings now used for something\u00a0other than\u00a0what they\u00a0once were.<\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0Irish music when you can actually find it playing!\u00a0 It&#8217;s so\u00a0pleasant-sounding and\u00a0lively!<\/p>\n<p>8 ) Obviously the accent.<\/p>\n<p>9) I love that\u00a0pretty much everyone\u00a0goes to the pubs.\u00a0 We go on our IES\u00a0Abroad outtings and it&#8217;s just chill.\u00a0 You watch the game, go to talk to your\u00a0friends and have a\u00a0drink or 2.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not sleazy (unless you go to Temple Bar) and it&#8217;s a\u00a0&#8216;grand&#8217; time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>10) The Irishes&#8217; obsession with America.\u00a0 It&#8217;s cute and makes me feel super cool.\u00a0 Duh.\u00a0\u00a0Actually, it sucks cause it\u00a0melds the cultures together a bit, but at the\u00a0same time it&#8217;s funny because they love us.\u00a0 They love our music,\u00a0our tv, our celebrities, our country, our autonomy, our\u00a0ideas!\u00a0 We&#8217;re great!<\/p>\n<p>11) The smells here.\u00a0 Irish people have the best perfume.\u00a0\u00a0Every\u00a0woman wears the same perfume, I&#8217;m pretty sure.\u00a0 And the guys all seem\u00a0to smell the same too!\u00a0 It&#8217;s sorta strange.\u00a0 I really want to buy the perfume though,\u00a0it&#8217;s strong yet not too in the face and reminiscent of my time here so far.<\/p>\n<p>12) The loose stones and cement blocks in the sidewalk.\u00a0 I hunt them down, it&#8217;s fun stepping\u00a0on\u00a0the wobbly ones.\u00a0 Just don&#8217;t step in any holes where cobblestones have gone missing, not so great!<\/p>\n<p>13) Guinness and Jameson.\u00a0 I know we have it, but it&#8217;s everywhere here and it tastes better.\u00a0 It really does.<\/p>\n<p>14) EVERYTHING.\u00a0 I feckin&#8217; love it here.\u00a0 The end.\u00a0 The fact that my program is up in 2 weeks depresses me a LOT.\u00a0 I love my housemates; they are amazing.\u00a0 This place is beautiful, friendly, fun, warm, cozy, feels like home already.\u00a0\u00a0I never want to leave.\u00a0 I highly suggest studying here for more than a summer!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are all the things I hate after being here for a month, particularly things that stood out to me today: 1) Having to buy your grocery bags and when you forget them, having to\u00a0lug heavy groceries all the way &hellip;
