{"id":5391,"date":"2013-04-08T11:34:18","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T18:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/?p=5391"},"modified":"2013-04-08T10:12:40","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T17:12:40","slug":"kilkenny-drocheda-and-dingle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/04\/08\/kilkenny-drocheda-and-dingle\/","title":{"rendered":"Kilkenny, Drocheda, and Dingle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a while, but I have been doing things! \u00a0I visited a bunch of smaller towns recently. \u00a0It was a bit strange comparing those towns to Dublin. \u00a0First off, I dropped by Kilkenny. \u00a0They have a castle!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1432.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5392\" alt=\"Killkenny Castle\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1432-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1432-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1432-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t as cool as Blarney, though. \u00a0I prefer castles that are falling apart and dangerous to walk around in. \u00a0This castle is good if your idea of a castle is closer to\u00a0Versailles\u00a0 \u00a0They have redone it in the Victorian style and it has lovely wallpaper. \u00a0Wallpaper is a big deal, I have learned.<\/p>\n<p>There was a nice walk along the river leading up to the castle, and I stopped to read the inscription on a stone commemorating the casualties of war.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1435.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5393\" alt=\"English\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1435-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1435-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1435-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1435.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1436.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5394\" alt=\"Irish\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1436-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1436-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1436-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1436.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is the inscription in English and in Irish.<\/p>\n<p>And here is Kilkenny itself!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1437.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5395\" alt=\"Killkenny\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1437-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1437-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1437-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I&#8217;m sorry but I had to do it; my brother and I spent a summer watching South Park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1442.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5396\" alt=\"They killed Kenny!\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1442-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1442-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1442-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, we took a class trip to Drocheda, which is beautiful. \u00a0It&#8217;s especially lovely if you have a guide. \u00a0One of our professors grew up in Drocheda and he gave us a guided tour of the city!<\/p>\n<p>We dropped by a graveyard (I never went to graveyards before I came to Ireland and now I can&#8217;t seem to stop peering in). \u00a0There was an interesting sculpture inset in one of the walls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1464.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5397\" alt=\"drowned lovers\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1464-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1464-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1464-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1464.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a guidebook our professor pulled out, the statues are of a drowned woman and one of her lovers. \u00a0The\u00a0sculptor\u00a0chose to depict them, not as they were in life, but instead as they were found after they had died. \u00a0A very unusual choice.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out Drocheda was burned to the ground by Oliver Cromwell on his rampage through Ireland. \u00a0He is not a very popular Oliver. \u00a0There <em>is<\/em> a popular Oliver however, and that is Saint Oliver Plunkett. \u00a0They even have his head on display in a church!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1471.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5398\" alt=\"Oliver Plunkett's head\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1471-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1471-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1471-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1471.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that is his actual head.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we took a nice hike up a hill and got a spectacular view of the whole city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1488.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5399\" alt=\"Drocheda\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1488-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1488-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1488-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What amazed me the most about Drocheda was the fact that it contains so much history. \u00a0All of the little towns around Ireland have something significant connected with them, I&#8217;m sure. \u00a0This is an ancient country, built on myth and legend and sustained by stories, and that is a fact that keeps shocking me. \u00a0The United States are so young by comparison! Despite the fact that there was a culture thriving in America before Europeans arrived, we have nowhere near the stories that Ireland has.<\/p>\n<p>Buuuut Ireland also has a county called Dingle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5400\" alt=\"heehee dingle\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1500-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1500-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1500-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1500.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I laughed all weekend about that one.<\/p>\n<p>We took a bus to Killarney and took a pony trap through the Gap of Dunloe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5401\" alt=\"Dandy and the landscape\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1538-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1538-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1538-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dandy is in almost all of my pictures, that lucky little horse. \u00a0The views were spectacular. I have far too many photos of the amazing landscapes. \u00a0The countryside was constantly shifting, too. \u00a0There are pieces that look like deserts and other parts that look like the lush, green countryside you would expect from Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5402\" alt=\"Killarney landscape\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1611-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1611-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1611-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also took a cheerful run around a beach! \u00a0With actual sand instead of just rocks!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1652.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5403\" alt=\"seascape\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1652-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1652-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/04\/IMG_1652-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All in all, I took some truly amazing trips these past two weeks. \u00a0These are kind of remote, out-of-the-way areas. \u00a0It was a five-hour bus ride out to Dingle through some of the most glorious farmlands I have ever seen. \u00a0The ocean was tucked on our left side, the hills on our right, and there were sheep everywhere. \u00a0I feel like I got to see a side of Ireland that tourists are always searching for but may not be able to find. \u00a0There is a lot of space contained in this small island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a while, but I have been doing things! \u00a0I visited a bunch of smaller towns recently. \u00a0It was a bit strange comparing those towns to Dublin. \u00a0First off, I dropped by Kilkenny. \u00a0They have a castle!
