{"id":5104,"date":"2013-02-22T09:39:21","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T17:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/?p=5104"},"modified":"2013-02-22T09:39:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T17:39:21","slug":"immersion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/","title":{"rendered":"Immersion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I feel rather immersed in Irish culture by this point (as I should&#8211;it&#8217;s midterm this week which means I&#8217;ve been here 6 whole school weeks). \u00a0I can take buses to where I need to go, I can take trains and taxis, I can find Trinity and St. Stephen&#8217;s Green and O&#8217;Connell Street&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This week in particular I&#8217;ve felt like I&#8217;m part of the city. \u00a0Last Saturday I went to the Jameson Film Festival and saw the Irish premier of <em>Cloud Atlas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5105\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/img_0903\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5105\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0903-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0903-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0903-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0903-624x835.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0903.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>It was quite a beautiful movie. \u00a0I&#8217;ve heard it got a lot of crap or a lot of disinterest, but I&#8217;d recommend it. \u00a0I found it beautiful. \u00a0I like strange movies and beautiful cinematography, and it made me feel very connected to everyone in the theatre. \u00a0It&#8217;s the first movie I&#8217;ve ever seen on my own. \u00a0Kinda a weird thing to say, but it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p>I also went to see a play! \u00a0I saw King Lear at the Abbey Theatre. \u00a0FUN FACT TIME The Abbey theatre was the second national theatre (the first one&#8217;s in Munich I think) and was established by William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory. \u00a0The theatre in Ireland traditionally spread the news before there were newspapers or phones readily available.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5106\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/img_0925\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5106\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0925-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0925-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0925-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0925-624x835.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0925.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s hard to get a sense of the play because I took crap pictures, but this guy was the Fool. \u00a0He sat out on stage at first and he was really good. \u00a0He was my favorite first-act character. \u00a0By the way, this was the first time I&#8217;d ever seen the play, so I didn&#8217;t know what was going to happen. \u00a0Edgar turns out to be important, who knew! \u00a0He was my favorite second-act character. \u00a0The play did some great visual things and some dance stuff I didn&#8217;t really like, but they had Irish wolfhounds wander across the stage at random intervals!<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5107\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/irish_wolfhound\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5107\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/Irish_Wolfhound-300x249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/Irish_Wolfhound-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/Irish_Wolfhound.jpg 542w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">I got to pet them afterward (this isn&#8217;t my picture, it&#8217;s from Google). \u00a0They felt like carpets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">On my way back from rock climbing one day, I stopped by a little shop on Harcourt Street. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5108\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/img_0919\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5108\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0919-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0919-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0919-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0919-624x835.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0919.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">It&#8217;s an Irish language store with an Irish-speaking bar in the basement! \u00a0I bought a grammar and looked at all the books they&#8217;d translated into Irish. \u00a0The shop owners were speaking Irish with a couple of people in the store, and it was the first time I realized I was in a foreign country. \u00a0I had no idea what they were saying. \u00a0Sometimes I&#8217;d catch an &#8216;agus,&#8217; which I know means &#8216;and,&#8217; but that&#8217;s all. \u00a0I&#8217;ll probably go back. \u00a0They had The Hobbit in Irish and it looked very, very cool. \u00a0Couldn&#8217;t read a word of it, but it looked neat. \u00a0And they had Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone, which was &#8220;Harry Potter agus an \u00d3rchloch&#8221; in Irish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">Finally, two strange Irish things I experienced. \u00a0First, I found<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5109\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/img_0905\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5109\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0905-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0905-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0905-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0905-624x429.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0905.jpg 1688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>the Celtic Racing Pigeon Club. \u00a0Who knew?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">Secondly, I had the most dangerous drink in Ireland:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5110\" href=\"http:\/\/oldblogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2013\/02\/22\/immersion\/img_0938\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5110\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0938-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0938-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0938-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0938-624x835.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_0938.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>It has a red dye in it that caused ADHD in children and other neurological disorders. \u00a0It&#8217;s illegal in most European countries, but not Ireland!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">Tasted a bit like hand sanitizer, but not in a terrible way. \u00a0If you can imagine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em\">So!
