{"id":3310,"date":"2012-06-12T06:55:44","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T14:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/?p=3310"},"modified":"2012-06-12T06:55:44","modified_gmt":"2012-06-12T14:55:44","slug":"getting-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/2012\/06\/12\/getting-around\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Around"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t know the songtaos stopped running at 10pm.\u00a0 Man\u2026I&#8217;m more than a hour&#8217;s walk away from home and its midnight\u2026this is going to be a long night.\u00a0 One block, five blocks, a mile, I still haven&#8217;t seen any taxi&#8217;s\u2026wait, is that a tuktuk?\u00a0 They rip you, off, but at least I&#8217;ll get home.\u00a0 &#8220;Duang Kamon,&#8221; I tell the driver after waving him down.\u00a0 He says &#8220;Yes, yes&#8221; so enthusiastically, he has to know where I want to go.\u00a0 We drive for about fifteen minutes, and he starts to slow down on this secluded street.\u00a0 Secluded besides that scantily clad woman standing in the street\u2026.and another\u2026and ten more\u2026.where are we?\u00a0 The tuktuk slows down, stops, he looks at me, puts on a huge smile and says, &#8220;Here you go!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;No no no no no no no!&#8221; I tell him.\u00a0 Five minutes of explaining, ten more minutes of driving, and forty extra baht later I&#8217;m home, far, far, far away from the red light district.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3335\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2012\/06\/12\/getting-around\/img_5170-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-3335\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_51702-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Monk in a songtao\" width=\"430\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_51702-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_51702-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_51702-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a>Transportation is crazy here, but it works.\u00a0 Tuktuks are tourist traps, and they can charge up to five times more than songtaos, which the locals use.\u00a0 Songtaos are small pickup trucks with two benches in the back.\u00a0 Some of them go on certain routes, but red songtaos will take you any where.\u00a0 So far on songtaos: I&#8217;ve cut my eye opening the door, talked trash about Dublin with some Irish women, arrived at four different destinations before the driver understood where I actually wanted to go, met a 17 year old monk from Napal, and have been totally ripped off driving up to the Buddhist temple, Doi Suteph.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3324\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/studyingabroad\/2012\/06\/12\/getting-around\/img_5210-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3324\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52101-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52101-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52101-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52101-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-3320\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52251-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Monk blessing a child\" width=\"286\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52251-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52251-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/studyingabroad\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_52251-624x935.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The songtao could barely make it up the winding road up to Doi Suteph, but once we got there, we were greeted by dancing children, monks, and the most elaborate, gold-encrusted temple I&#8217;ve ever seen.\u00a0 It was a very peaceful place, but we were all overwhelmed.\u00a0 As great as my professors were at teaching the concepts of Buddhism at the university,I was not prepared to\u00a0understand what was going on at Doi Suteph.\u00a0 It will be something to think about.\u00a0 I did receive a blessing from a monk, but I was mostly in it for the refreshing water he was sprinkling on visitors&#8217; heads.<\/p>\n<p>Songtaos have also taken me to my new apartment, above the shop of an eccentric dressmaker named Madame T.\u00a0 Immediately upon meeting her, she told me all about her son who had become a &#8220;lady-boy,&#8221;
