An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2018\/08\/the-strange-unique-intimacy-of-the-roommate-relationship\/567296\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlantic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comments that what was anticipated by some as a cyclical phenomenon actually stuck with us. Living with a handful of strangers is still common, often across the country from family members, as people become increasingly mobile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economic benefits are pretty clear- roommates save you a lot of money. Rental costs are on the rise and many college graduates are burdened by debt, whereas housing is typically people\u2019s biggest expense. MarketWatch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/why-millennials-may-never-get-to-live-alone-2017-02-23\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that in the country\u2019s biggest rental markets, \u201ca renter can save on average 13% of [their] income by getting a housemate.\u201d Since most of us can expect to live with other people for many years to come, it\u2019s worth looking into some of the social costs and benefits of cohabitation as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your living environment is a huge contributor to well-being. A stressful and toxic living situation can have real emotional costs, while a communicative and loving atmosphere can be a source of family and advice for young people far away from their family support networks. Several people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2018\/08\/the-strange-unique-intimacy-of-the-roommate-relationship\/567296\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interviewed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on this topic agreed that the roommate relationship is a unique one, and often a \u201cdating mindset\u201d is helpful for the roommate search, instead of just living with strangers. Along with this, more dating-esque websites are popping up to find roommates, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roomies.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roomies.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These websites also encourage the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Signalling_(economics)#Job-market_signalling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signaling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which people use specific signals, like mentioning their degree, to try to convey that they are responsible and will pay rent on time.
