{"id":909,"date":"2010-09-17T15:06:19","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T23:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/collinsunbound\/?p=909"},"modified":"2010-09-17T15:06:19","modified_gmt":"2010-09-17T23:06:19","slug":"spotlight-cassandra-palmore-access-services-supervisor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/spotlight-cassandra-palmore-access-services-supervisor\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight: Cassandra Palmore, Access Services Supervisor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-914\" style=\"margin-left: 7px;margin-right: 7px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2010\/09\/Cassandra2.jpg\" alt=\"Cassandra\" width=\"155\" height=\"172\" \/>Cassandra Palmore, Access Services Supervisor, knows Collins library exceptionally well.\u00a0 A native of Tacoma, she transferred from Tacoma Community College to the University of Puget Sound where she joined the library as a student assistant.\u00a0 After graduating in 1994, she continued working in the library as a Circulation and Interlibrary Loan specialist.\u00a0 In 1996 she began graduate school at the University of Washington and received her Master\u2019s in Library and Information Science in June of 1998.\u00a0 Cassandra became Access Services Supervisor in August of 1998.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like best about working in the library?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Working with my colleagues and the students and seeing how technology has changed over the years! I also enjoy meeting and talking with staff from other libraries at conferences and consortium meetings.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice share ideas with colleagues!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some of your favorite things?<\/strong><br \/>\n80\u2019s music, Netflix, and traveling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would surprise students about the \u2018behind the scenes\u2019 operations of the circulation department?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of Interlibrary Loan requests we process each academic year: last year, over 19,000 filled borrowing and lending requests.<\/li>\n<li>How many staff FTE we have to sustain our services. We employ 65 students and 4.1 staff FTE to cover 116.5 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Our 24 hour staff schedule<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do you ever get wild excuses for overdue books &#8211; or special requests?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you waive my new fines so I can better take care of my older fines?<\/li>\n<li>I didn\u2019t know when they were due.\u00a0 (The book is stamped with a due date.\u00a0 Also, a courtesy notice is sent out before the due date, along with three separate Email overdue notices before a billing replacement is sent).<\/li>\n<li>I know I returned this on time; I just found it on the shelf.\u00a0 (The book is freezing cold and wet \u2013 it was raining that day).<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-854\" style=\"margin-left: 7px;margin-right: 7px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2010\/09\/CP_dogbook.jpg\" alt=\"CP_dogbook\" width=\"185\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2010\/09\/CP_dogbook.jpg 256w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2010\/09\/CP_dogbook-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/>My favorite is a book, \u201cThe Mentally Sound Dog,\u201d that was returned chewed up by the patron\u2019s dog.\u00a0 This always makes me chuckle.<\/li>\n<li>Funny situation: On February 28, 2001, a patron had come to the desk to dispute a replacement fee for a book that was never returned.\u00a0 He swore up and down that he had returned it and needed his transcripts.\u00a0 I informed him that our records show that the item is still on his library record, but I would go up to the stacks and check again.\u00a0 I was in the stacks scanning the shelves for the book\u00a0 (didn\u2019t find it) and that\u2019s when I heard what sounded like hundreds of people running; then the books started shaking on the shelving!\u00a0 Yes, we were in the middle of an earthquake!
