For many first-year students, the mid-point of the fall semester serves as a wake-up call to the intellectual demands of college. Indeed, as one first-year student noted during a research consultation with a liaison librarian last week, <strong>\u201cThings just got real.\u201d <\/strong>The college library is an unfamiliar and sometimes intimidating place for many of these students (see Research Practices Survey results below), and Collins Library offers several services to support both students and the faculty who teach them:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"477\">\n<div id=\"attachment_6205\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/09\/peer_gal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6205\" class=\"wp-image-6205 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/09\/peer_gal.jpg\" alt=\"peer_gal\" width=\"150\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liz Roepke \u201915, Library Peer Research Advisor<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New!<\/strong> <strong>Liz Roepke<\/strong> \u201915 is the library\u2019s first-ever <a href=\"http:\/\/research.pugetsound.edu\/peerresearch?hs=a\">Peer Research Advisor<\/a>! Liz has received extensive training and is ready and eager to help first-year students and others enrolled in introductory courses. Liz is available to meet with individual students in a comfortable, non-threatening atmosphere to provide research support and follow-up to library instruction. Liz also writes a regular Friday blog post for <em>Collins Unbound<\/em>; her most recent post was on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/2014\/10\/17\/advice-from-liz-roepke-15-peer-research-advisor-get-started-on-your-final-papersprojects\/\">the importance of time management<\/a>. In fact, many seniors comment that these guides are the single most important library resource that they regret not using earlier in their college careers. Faculty members who would like a customized library course page created for them should contact their <a href=\"http:\/\/research.pugetsound.edu\/content.php?pid=488912&amp;sid=4009629\">liaison librarian<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>As always, Collins Library continues to offer <a href=\"http:\/\/research.pugetsound.edu\/help?hs=a\">multiple avenues for receiving help<\/a> at any point in the research process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/10\/3StudyPics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6506\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/10\/3StudyPics.jpg\" alt=\"3StudyPics\" width=\"608\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/10\/3StudyPics.jpg 608w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2014\/10\/3StudyPics-300x57.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do our first-year students struggle the most with research?<\/strong> This past August, our incoming students received invitations to take the <strong>Research Practices Survey<\/strong> and 43 percent of them completed it while 67 percent partially completed it. Key findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Limited Experience with Library Research Tools<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Only 56 percent had used an online library catalog<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Just 57 percent had searched a subscription database like JSTOR<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0 Only 44 percent correctly structured a Boolean search query<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Incomplete Understanding of Basic Research Concepts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Only 21 percent correctly defined the difference between a scholarly journal and a popular magazine<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Just 47 percent correctly identified the purpose of a citation; 22 percent indicated that they thought paraphrasing did not require a citation.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Students were inconsistent in identifying primary sources in the disciplines; for example, 88 percent correctly identified empirical research as a primary source in the sciences, but only 45 percent identified a novel as a primary source in literary studies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Main Research Challenges<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Students were given the opportunity to identify what they believe to be their main challenges when conducting research.
