Open access scholarly literature is free of charge to the user and often carries less restrictive copyright and licensing barriers than traditionally published works, for both the users and the authors. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.uw.edu\/research\/open\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Introduction to OA&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;University of Washington Libraries&nbsp;is licensed under&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY 4.0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Open Access movement was birthed from a conference of the Open Society Institute, where attendees drafted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org\/read\">Budapest Open Access Initiative<\/a>, which was published in early 2002. The initiative called for using new technology to develop an \u201cunprecedented public good\u201d through free exchange of scholarly literature. The document went on to describe this define this as Open Access:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><a>\u201cBy \u2018open access\u2019 to this literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L5rVH1KGBCY\">Open Access Explained<\/a>, a short video from PHD Comic gives a great overview of the context in which Open Access provides important benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Open Access Explained!\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L5rVH1KGBCY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Creative Commons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Copyright<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>is the intellectual property law that protects a creative work from theft or misuse. &nbsp;It is the creator&#8217;s legal claim to the works that he or she creates. By default, any original creative work is copyrighted to the creator when that work is expressed in a tangible form. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creative Commons\u2019 easy-to-use&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">copyright licenses<\/a>&nbsp;provide a simple, standardized way to give the public permission to share and use your creative work \u2014 on conditions of your choice. CC licenses let you easily change your copyright terms from the default of \u201call rights reserved\u201d to \u201csome rights reserved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creative Commons licenses are not an alternative to copyright.&nbsp;They work alongside copyright&nbsp;and enable you to modify your copyright terms to best suit your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Collins Memorial Library is recognizing Open Access Week Oct 25-31.
