{"id":12659,"date":"2021-03-19T19:33:15","date_gmt":"2021-03-20T02:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/?p=12659"},"modified":"2021-04-05T16:59:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T23:59:03","slug":"womens-studies-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/womens-studies-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s Studies On Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2021\/03\/whm2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"417\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2021\/03\/whm2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2021\/03\/whm2.jpg 696w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2021\/03\/whm2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/soundideas.pugetsound.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=2057&amp;context=thetrail_all\"><em>The Trail,<\/em> Dec. 3, 1971 issue,<\/a> Women\u2019s liberation issue, pg. 8-15<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In Fall 2020, students, faculty, and staff celebrated the arrival of Puget Sound\u2019s new academic major in Gender &amp; Queer Studies, but did you know that the university has offered courses in Women\u2019s Studies since 1972?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundideas.pugetsound.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=2054&amp;context=thetrail_all\">November 5, 1971 issue of <em>The Trail<\/em><\/a> (pg. 9), the first was an introductory course titled \u201cWomen in American Society,\u201d which promised to \u201cfoster an understanding of the contemporary situation of women through historical introspection.\u201d To generate interest and promote the new course to the campus community, students coordinated <a href=\"https:\/\/soundideas.pugetsound.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=2057&amp;context=thetrail_all\">a special women\u2019s issue of <em>The Trail<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>published in December 1971<em>. <\/em>This fascinating issue features contributors engaging with a variety of topics reflecting the agenda and concerns of the national women\u2019s movement in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as competing perspectives on feminism from Puget Sound students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many early Women\u2019s Studies programs, University of Puget Sound\u2019s program experienced its share of growing pains and other difficulties due to limited administrative support, budgets, staffing, and resources, in addition to broader challenges to Women\u2019s Studies as a necessary, political, and academically valid field of study. Its survival, promotion, and continued development into our current GQS program relied on the interest, support, and dedication of a sometimes small, yet passionate group of students, faculty, and staff over the past (nearly) 50 years.
