{"id":10979,"date":"2019-02-22T08:00:05","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/?p=10979"},"modified":"2019-02-19T09:00:03","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T17:00:03","slug":"raspberry-pi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/raspberry-pi\/","title":{"rendered":"The Raspberry Pi: perfect for a single purpose kiosk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2019\/02\/RaspberryPi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10980\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2019\/02\/RaspberryPi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2019\/02\/RaspberryPi.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2019\/02\/RaspberryPi-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>No dirges played nor were there any funeral processions leading to recycling when the Library catalog terminal died over the Winter Break.\u00a0 The elderly desktop computer had still been diligently helping the occasional patron look for the location of books, DVDs, scores, and journals right up to the end.\u00a0 Even though more and more people use Primo on their smart phones as they search the stacks, it is nice to have a place to check quickly, particularly if you can&#8217;t access a smart phone in that moment of needing to find a title, and logging into the Learning Commons computers can sometimes take longer than you want when you just need to check one thing in the catalog.\u00a0 That is why we are happy that a spontaneous brainstorming session between Desktop Lifecycle Administrator Jessica Hartenstein, Information Resources Coordinator Jada Pelger, and myself in my office led to the idea for using a Raspberry Pi to make a replacement to look up things in Primo.\u00a0 We have been teaching students how to make Raspberry Pi projects in the Makerspace, but hadn&#8217;t really thought about how we could use them for the Library.\u00a0 The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer and perfect for a single purpose kiosk like this.\u00a0 It also conveniently takes up very, very little space.\u00a0 The Raspberry Pi kiosk to search Primo is located at the Circulation Desk on the first floor.
