{"id":10744,"date":"2018-11-27T14:55:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-27T22:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/?p=10744"},"modified":"2018-11-27T14:59:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-27T22:59:37","slug":"collins-library-links-whats-new-in-the-makerspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/collins-library-links-whats-new-in-the-makerspace\/","title":{"rendered":"Collins Library Links: What&#8217;s new in the Makerspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4643 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/files\/2013\/09\/2013_CollinsLibraryLink.jpg\" alt=\"2013_CollinsLibraryLink\" width=\"600\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; text-align: left;\" align=\"left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What\u2019s New in the Makerspace<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Contact Information:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s easy \u2013 just contact <a href=\"mailto:makerspace@pugetsound.edu\">makerspace@pugetsound.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guest Speakers:<\/strong>\u00a0 Earlier this semester, we welcomed John Devine from the Tacoma Public Schools who established the SAMI Makerspace and is now working at the new iDEA alternative school.\u00a0 This week Darcy Anderson from <a href=\"http:\/\/tinkertopia.com\/\">Tinkertopia<\/a> visited the space.\u00a0 Both these speakers shared insights about the growth and development of problem solving\/creative thinking and technology happening in the K-12 environment.\u00a0 All the more reason to think about how the Makerspace can support our current and future students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D Printing:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have added a number of new filaments, including translucent colors and glow in the dark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D Scanning<\/strong>:\u00a0 Stop by and check out our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ncsu.edu\/devices\/structure-3d-scanner\"><strong>Structure 3D Sensor<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 iPad-based handheld scanner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wearables<\/strong>:\u00a0 We provide tools and support for sewing and working with fabrics.\u00a0 <strong>We are looking for students or faculty to partner with us to learn more about\u00a0integrating electronics into textile projects.<\/strong> Wearable technology is an exciting area for innovation and creativity, with interest in it growing from both consumers and tech companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electronics:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget there are Arduinos, Raspberry Pi and Makey-Makey (think mini- computer) devices to use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper Arts and Upcycling:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stop by and see our incredible paper dress designed by our Maker students using recycled books.\u00a0 Consider offering a workshop on journal, book or zine design.\u00a0 We are just concluding our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/collinsunbound\/fall-2018-zine-series-tuesday-evenings-from-500-600pm\/\">Fall Zine Workshop series<\/a> coordinated by Katy Curtis, Humanities Librarian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orientation:<\/strong>\u00a0 15 first year students had the opportunity to participate in a 3 day Immersion event that included the Makerspace as well as visits to local printers and book designers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Building:<\/strong>\u00a0 Consider booking the Makerspace for a Team Building workshop.\u00a0 We can accommodate up to 15 people.\u00a0 Inspired by Darcy and R.R. Anderson of Tinkertopia, we invite you to consider a 1.5 hour workshop that will be fun, creative and build relationships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Equipment:\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>We are anxiously awaiting delivery of a desktop laser cutter in November that will increase opportunities for making!\u00a0 We now have wood burning tools, new button makers and a host of new supplies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take Apart Events:\u00a0 <\/strong>Reverse engineering and take apart events are great ways to learn about design and construction.\u00a0 It helps us learn how things work.
