{"id":839,"date":"2017-11-05T14:27:37","date_gmt":"2017-11-05T14:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ups.edu\/cesblogs\/?p=839"},"modified":"2017-11-09T22:45:14","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T22:45:14","slug":"one-small-step","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/2017\/11\/05\/one-small-step\/","title":{"rendered":"One Small Step"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>November is National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices-services\/ces\/career-events\/career-development-month\/\" target=\"_blank\">Career Development Month<\/a>, and it\u2019s a great time to start <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">exploring the cosmos<\/span> thinking about life after Puget Sound!<\/p>\n<p>For most people, figuring out what you want to do with your life is a complicated subject. For college students in particular, facing a million other competing must-do tasks to complete your degrees, the process can be overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t have to be. Just take small steps!<\/p>\n<p>When you boil the process down to its simplest form, career development consists of three steps: self-assessment, exploration, and action. Whether you just arrived at Puget Sound this fall, or you&#8217;re a super-senior eyeing a December graduation, those three steps can be manageable.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few easy activities in each category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are you?\u00a0 What do you want out of life? Assess your talents and interests so you can identify career fields that might be a good match:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inventory your experiences\u2014work, volunteer, travel, club, etc. Reflect on the good and bad, and what you\u2019d like to do again.<\/li>\n<li>Identify your strengths. What are you good at? Ask friends, family, supervisors, coaches, faculty, etc. for their input. <em>In a way, this is networking, so it\u2019s good practice for that, too!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Consider taking formal personality or interest <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/BKJH\">assessments<\/a> to jump start your thinking about career options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s possible? What&#8217;s attainable? Explore options: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Peruse career-related books, magazines, and professional journals. <em>Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/Brig\">CES Career Resource Library<\/a>! <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Surf the web for resources like industry websites and blogs. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices--services\/ces\/students\/exploring-careers\/career-cruising\/\">Career Cruising<\/a> has industry guides.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Search the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices--services\/ces\/students\/exploring-careers\/ask\/\">ASK Network<\/a> for alumni who work in fields that interest you. Use the LinkedIn.com\/Alumni tool to research what grads in your major are doing with their degrees. <em>Consider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices--services\/ces\/students\/connecting-with-alumni\/\">contacting alumni<\/a> for informational interviews. Read the CESblog \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/FGRE\">A Logger on the Verge: Informational Interviews<\/a>.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve assessed and explored. Now it\u2019s time to take action! Prepare for a successful job or internship search: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/FGNN\">resume<\/a> that markets your skills and experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Develop an introduction that you can adapt for many situations. <em>Read the CESblog \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/FGSN\">Connect and Impress in 15 Seconds or Less<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Make your job search public knowledge!
