While this may seem like an annoying question, it does provide you with the opportunity to practice articulating why your degree is valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Gardner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceri.msu.edu\/\">Collegiate Employment Research Institute<\/a> annually surveys employers to assess their hiring projections. He also asks employers what skills they seek in candidates. Can you guess what one of the top skills is?<\/p>\n<p>Flexibility. Yes, flexibility. Dr. Gardner states that \u201cemployers seek candidates across all majors who can slide into a variety of positions as needed or adapt quickly to changing conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound like you?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-664\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;margin: 10px\" title=\"Borrow this and other books from the CES Career Resource Library in Howarth 101.\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/files\/2010\/09\/you-majored-in-what-106x150.jpg\" alt=\"you majored in what\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Have you had to change directions and focus on something else when working on a group project? When working in your student staff position on campus, have you had to drop what you were working on and pick up something else? Do you characterize yourself as a \u201cgo with it\u201d kind of person? If so, that\u2019s flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other skills employers mention as important:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning and applying knowledge from experiences<\/li>\n<li>Identifying new problems and creating solutions<\/li>\n<li>Communicating information in a clear and concise way<\/li>\n<li>Developing and maintaining professional networks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your liberal arts education helps you become a critical thinker who gains knowledge, identifies problems, suggests solutions, communicates, and connects. Your Puget Sound degree affirms your immersion in a learning environment that develops those skills.<\/p>\n<p>In short, you\u2019re developing the skills and competencies employers seek for meeting their ever-evolving needs.
