However, they may all prove to be too good to be true! Members of the University of Puget Sound Alumni Council Career and Employment Services Committee offer tips on avoiding scams:<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cDiscern the source of the information, be a critical thinker; apply the critical analysis that you learn in the classroom to your job search.\u201d Ted Meriam \u201905<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look for opportunities on job boards (including Craigslist), note that legitimate employers will include the employer name.\u00a0It\u2019s always beneficial to then go to the employer\u2019s website to confirm that the opportunity is available.\u201d Lacey Leffler \u201903 and Lael Carlson \u201902<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook for professionalism in the postings (spelling errors, wacky formatting may be red flags).\u201d Shannon Hughes \u201992<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t consider anything that requires an up-front investment.\u201d Lacey Leffler \u201902<\/p>\n<p>Quick Consumer Tip from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumeraction.gov\/\">Consumer Protection Agency<\/a>: \u201c<strong>A deal that sounds too good to be true usually is!<\/strong> Be wary of promises to fix your credit problems, low-interest credit card offers, deals that let you skip credit card payments, work-at-home job opportunities, risk-free investments, and free travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many reputable job boards offer security information to their users.\u00a0For example, Monster.com\u2019s security center offers advice on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/my.monster.com\/securitycenter\/?WT.mc_n=CRMUS000781\">avoiding online fraud<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other resources to check out:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices--services\/ces\/students\/job-search-resources\/job-seeker-beware\/\">CES Job Seeker Beware<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/edu\/microsites\/moneymatters\/jobs-hunting-scams.shtml\">FTC Money Matters Job-Hunting\/Job Scams<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/edu\/microsites\/moneymatters\/jobs-work-at-home.shtml\">FTC: Consumer Information to help you avoid scams<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you think you have been the victim of a job search scam or any other fraud, it is important to report the fraud to the local police department.
