Although I\u2019m a fan of the site, I do have one pet peeve: the generic request to connect.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/files\/2013\/03\/LinkedInTat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3236 alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;margin: 10px\" title=\"Get LinkedIn and stand out!\" alt=\"Get LinkedIn and stand out!\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/files\/2013\/03\/LinkedInTat.jpg\" width=\"347\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/files\/2013\/03\/LinkedInTat.jpg 386w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/cesblogs\/files\/2013\/03\/LinkedInTat-300x270.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The folks at LinkedIn have made it extremely easy to connect.<\/p>\n<p>Too easy.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve eliminated the opportunity to personalize requests in many situations (from your smart phone, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\/alumni\">Alumni page<\/a>, or from a list generated by a search).<\/p>\n<p>As a result, most requests have a generic statement about wanting to \u201cadd you to my professional network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only is that boooring, it&#8217;s an entirely lost opportunity\u2014to demonstrate a high level of professionalism&#8230;to impress me with your polite, well-thought-out request&#8230;to stand out from the masses.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty difficult to stand out when yours is just one more automatically-generated request in my mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>I get requests to connect on a daily basis\u2014it\u2019s a side effect of showing people how to use the site\u2014and often I don\u2019t recognize the requester. These requests typically come from people who haven\u2019t completed their profiles\u2014there\u2019s no picture to jog my memory, no headline to clue me in to their professional roles or goals, and no indication of why they would want to connect with me.<\/p>\n<p>Would you become \u201cfriends\u201d with someone on Facebook who you didn\u2019t recognize at all?<\/p>\n<p>Probably not.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend customizing requests to every person you want to connect with, particularly if you don\u2019t know them well. A friend or family member might accept just by seeing your name. But what about your supervisor from three years ago? A favorite professor? An alumnus you met at ASK Night?<\/p>\n<p>Just two or three lines can make the difference between \u201cAccept\u201d and \u201cIgnore\u201d\u2014and it\u2019s a good practice to develop as your grow in your professional life.<\/p>\n<p>Make your requests to connect from each person\u2019s profile page, which always provides the option to customize. Remind the person how they know you and why you want to connect.
