The concept of \u201cleaving a trail\u201d emerged as a common theme.<\/p>\n<p>We often think of a resume as the go-to resource for applying for positions. However, it\u2019s important to think more broadly. <em>Yes, absolutely, you need to have a great resume.<\/em> But it\u2019s also important to think about other ways that you can demonstrate to an employer the skills and competencies you bring to the table. Many of you (if not all) are already leaving a trail; the next step is to showcase relevant items to a prospective employer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow, don\u2019t tell\u201d that you can do the work, says <a href=\"..\/2012\/03\/02\/tech-industry-titan\/\">Lloyd Tabb, Tech Industry Titan<\/a>. \u201cIf [an employer] is interviewing two candidates, and one has a portfolio demonstrating what he has produced or made, and the other does not, which of the two do you think will get hired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim Sharp \u201975 of Comedy Central talked about the ways some of the talent got their Comedy Central gigs\u2014some started on YouTube including the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/shows\/workaholics\">Workaholics<\/a>. In fact, Jim said that there are staff members at Comedy Central who look at YouTube to discover budding directors, writers, and actors.<\/p>\n<p>Cindy Hammel \u201902 who has worked in advertising across the globe talked about how many companies are now turning to consumers to create their advertising like in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crashthesuperbowl.com\/\">Doritos Crash the Superbowl Ad contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to win a contest or be discovered on YouTube to leave a trail. There are many ways to do so; in fact, you may already be doing some of these:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a blog <\/strong>Nani Vishwanath \u201909 showcases her handmade greeting cards via her <a href=\"http:\/\/inthecards-nani.blogspot.com\/\">it\u2019s in the cards<\/a> blog. Is there something you\u2019re passionate about? Consider writing a blog on the topic as a way to demonstrate your creativity and writing skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Develop a website <\/strong>Have you developed a website for a student organization? If so, consider highlighting it on your resume so prospective employers can link to it and view your work. This is an easy way to highlight your web development or graphic design skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create a portfolio <\/strong>Do you have copies of articles you wrote for the Trail, photographs of art projects you\u2019ve completed, or charts and graphs of a research project you did for a class? Sometimes showcasing your work is as easy as downloading it onto a CD and leaving a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jobjournal.com\/article_full_text.asp?artid=2036\">digital portfolio<\/a> with a prospective employer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make an instructional video<\/strong> Do you have a skill that you\u2019d like to share with others? Recently, I wanted to learn to use royal icing to flood a sugar cookie. A quick google search turned up both an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PQ21qNqOzfk\">instructional video<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cakejournal.com\/tutorials\/how-to-flood-cookies-with-royal-icing\/\">blog<\/a> on the topic. Instructional videos are means of showing your communication\/presentation skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a newsletter<\/strong> Are you in an organization where you need to get information out to members quickly? If you create a newsletter, that\u2019s a great example that documents and highlights your writing skills to prospective employers.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about what you\u2019re doing. What do you have to <em>show<\/em> your work? All of it is part of your trail.<\/p>\n<p>A few closing comments from members of the Alumni Council Career and Employment Services Committee:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResumes we\u2019ve received that include a link to a portfolio helps show the candidate\u2019s style and tone.\u201d Shannon Hughes \u201992, Weyerhaeuser<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to get a high response rate for positions we post. Providing a way to differentiate yourself to standout from the typical \u2018white [paper] documentation\u2019 really adds value.\u201d Lacey Leffler \u201903, The Broadway Center for Performing Arts<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember, a resume is supposed to lead to a discussion and anything else that can add to that conversation is valuable.\u201d Wes Jordan \u201974, St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland<\/p>\n<p><em>As always, it\u2019s important to be professional about your trail. It\u2019s about telling your story and highlighting your relevant experience.
