Pharmacologists play an important role in that process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The job of a pharmacologist<\/strong> is to study drugs and other substances, and their interaction with living tissue. Working in research laboratories, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and government-run health-related agencies like the FDA or CDC, pharmacologists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop drugs that prevent and treat disease and illness.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct experiments to examine the effects of drugs or other chemicals on human and animal health.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the effectiveness of a drug or how it is absorbed into the body.<\/li>\n<li>Study whether substances such as chemicals, gases, food colorings, etc. are harmful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Areas of specialty include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical pharmacology: testing drugs on human subjects<\/li>\n<li>Neuropharmacology: analyzing effects of drugs on the nervous system<\/li>\n<li>Chemotherapy: developing and studying drugs that treat cancer<\/li>\n<li>Toxicology: studying poisonous drugs, chemicals and air pollutants<\/li>\n<li>Veterinary pharmacology: studying drugs and other substances, and how they interact with animals&#8217; bodies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>For an in-depth overview of pharmacology careers,<\/em><em> check out <\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pugetsound.edu\/about\/offices--services\/ces\/students\/exploring-careers\/career-cruising\/\" target=\"_blank\">Career Cruising<\/a><\/em><em> on <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cascade.pugetsound.edu\/cascade\/CESResources.main\" target=\"_blank\">Cascade<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Careers in pharmacology<\/strong> exist at all levels of education. If you want to do independent research or teach, you&#8217;ll need a Ph.D. With a master&#8217;s degree, you can find work as a technologist or research associate.
