I thought I&#8217;d share what I wrote for the assignment. (I&#8217;ve never been a fan of sharing my writing, so this is a big step!) Enjoy (:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Roots&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I like to think<br \/>\nthat all trees know each other.<br \/>\nTo us they are strange, strong, and silent,<br \/>\nnever breathing, always alive.<br \/>\nThey speak in whispers<br \/>\nwind through trembling, shimmering leaves<br \/>\na language so foreign<br \/>\neven the song birds cannot translate.<br \/>\nBut beneath the earth,<br \/>\ntheir roots tangle and twist<br \/>\ndeep into the soft, sweet soil,<br \/>\nmeeting among the drowsy pillbugs<br \/>\nand effervescent ants<br \/>\nto breathe and braid and bind in the dark<br \/>\nlike children clad in moss and mist,<br \/>\nholding hands<br \/>\nbehind the backs of the oblivious.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my freshman seminar class, Shaping the Shadow, we&#8217;re currently reading Mary Oliver&#8217;s collection of nature poems called American Primitive.
