It&#8217;s by Pablo Neruda. It is an ode to salt, as the title, <em>Ode to Salt<\/em>, tells us, but shows it in a different light than we would think. It&#8217;s very lovely and interesting, so enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ode to Salt by Pablo Neruda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This salt<br \/>\nin the salt cellar<br \/>\nI once saw in the salt mines.<br \/>\nI know<br \/>\nyou won&#8217;t<br \/>\nbelieve me<br \/>\nbut<br \/>\nit sings<br \/>\nsalt sings, the skin<br \/>\nof the salt mines<br \/>\nsings<br \/>\nwith a mouth smothered<br \/>\nby the earth.<br \/>\nI shivered in those<br \/>\nsolitudes<br \/>\nwhen I heard<br \/>\nthe voice<br \/>\nof<br \/>\nthe salt<br \/>\nin the desert.<br \/>\nNear Antofagasta<br \/>\nthe nitrous<br \/>\npampa<br \/>\nresounds:<br \/>\na<br \/>\nbroken<br \/>\nv oice,<br \/>\na mournful<br \/>\nsong.<\/p>\n<p>In its caves<br \/>\nthe salt moans, mountain<br \/>\nof buried light,<br \/>\ntranslucent cathedral,<br \/>\ncrystal of the sea, oblivion<br \/>\nof the waves.<br \/>\nAnd then on every table<br \/>\nin the world,<br \/>\nsalt,<br \/>\nwe see your piquant<br \/>\npowder<br \/>\nsprinkling<br \/>\nvital light<br \/>\nupon<br \/>\nour food.<br \/>\nPreserver<br \/>\nof the ancient<br \/>\nholds of ships,<br \/>\ndiscoverer<br \/>\non<br \/>\nthe high seas,<br \/>\nearliest<br \/>\nsailor<br \/>\nof the unknown, shifting<br \/>\nbyways of the foam.<br \/>\nDust of the sea, in you<br \/>\nthe tongue receives a kiss<br \/>\nfrom ocean night:<br \/>\ntaste imparts to every seasoned<br \/>\ndish your ocean essence;<br \/>\nthe smallest,<br \/>\nminiature<br \/>\nwave from the saltcellar<br \/>\nreveals to us<br \/>\nmore than domestic whiteness;<br \/>\nin it, we taste finitude.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just thought I&#8217;d share a poem we looked at in my Intro to English Studies class.
