This was the first time I&#8217;ve ever worked with litho, and let me tell you, it was QUITE a process.\u00a0Here&#8217;s the first sketch of my print idea!<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"__mceDel\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/bomb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2023 alignnone\" alt=\"bomb\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/bomb-1024x625.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/bomb-1024x625.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/bomb-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first step was graining the stone, in other words, literally removing a layer of limestone by hand.\u00a0To do this, we used several different grains of sand and a lot of physical labor. Litho stones are reused over and over again, and some are super old. As a matter of fact, here at Puget Sound we have litho stones that were once used in printing the Seattle Times! (Before printing presses&#8230; that&#8217;s old!) We grain the stones to remove the image from the artist prior.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/graining.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2049 alignnone\" alt=\"graining\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/graining-1024x580.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/graining-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/graining-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/graining.jpg 1201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Next step: drawing my image on the stone. This is done either with special types of &#8220;grease crayons&#8221;, which attract the oil in the ink used for printing, or with autographic ink. This part of the process went much faster with two people, so I had a friend of mine help out and I returned the favor when it was her turn to print.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/printing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2051 alignnone\" alt=\"printing\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/printing-1024x577.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/printing-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/printing-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.pugetsound.edu\/admission\/files\/2014\/03\/printing.jpg 1207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I (of course) ended up covered in ink again.
